YO GEORGIANS! :)

Sooo, my broody pulled a switcheroo on me yesterday, and after coming down for some snacks climbed back into the wrong bin. It was cool yesterday, and I think she was off the right eggs about 2 hours before I found out and quickly switched out the eggs.

It's day 14, I think.

Do you think those eggs will be alright?? I've never candled before, so I haven't done that, but I may try next time I catch her off the nest.

Hello sleeping peeps; I know I'm the only one here right now, but I wanted you all to know I was thinking of everyone today as I made `the rounds at the farm. I wondered about the Orpington chicks from my eggs that have left the farm, I congratulated the turkey hens on their long-awaited but steady number of eggs laid this spring. I smiled at the farm cats wrestling in the grass, and I was swarmed by juvenile birds from the Great Spring Hatch/Chick Madness of EE, Light Brahmas, Orpingtons, Sumatras, and dear General Pepper. Then I chuckled at my sweet ducks, the oldest of which are beginning to find their "quacks", and the youngest who very much adore their older "sisters".

And then I made a mental note to clean out the former bachelor coop for the new chicks coming from N.GA.

I like that each bird on the farm reminds me of one or more of you all :). Goodnight everyone, and have an awesome Friday tomorrow!

Ah, I knew I forgot something!

Yeah, four of the Buff Orp eggs you donated to the school were returned to me as chicks. If you want them back, you can have them. If not, I was thinking of keeping them. My sister wants to find a chicken she can raise for meat, and the Cornish Rocks (besides being nasty as hell) can't breed naturally.

Hehe, um... yeah they should be FINE!

You see, I didn't realize the other night that I left an incubator open. I had planned to candle eggs in the third incubator, and then bring some back to it (the open one), and decided not to. But I didn't realize I had left it open for the moving eggs. After candling, I laid down and went to sleep.

I didn't check again until the next AFTERNOON. It might not be so bad because the open incubator is kept in my closet, and that little heating element just kept going all night and day. But the closet has no clothes at the moment (spring cleaning) and I run an air conditioner in my room keeping the temperature in here around the 60's all day.

But I only lost one egg! And there's a chance it could have been gone before this incident. Most importantly, my 5 Royal Palm turkeys are still chugging along with full blood vessels and lots of movement!

So yeah I'm sure your eggs will be FINE! :-D

Okay, MORNING EVERYONE!

It's chilly today, and the sudden cold has already taken it's toll.

My last surviving polish chick - a buff polish pullet roughly 6 weeks old - is currently sitting in an incubator trying to warm back up in hopes of saving its life. Tractor Supply is STILL having issues keeping the d*mn heat lamp bulbs in stock. One went out the night before last, and I lost all of my silkie chicks. And since predators have killed all of my silkie adults, that was the last of my silkies! @mrsdszoo is helping me replenish some, but I lost my white silkies forever. Their offspring are all gone now.

And last night, the second bulb went out, and I am possibly going to lose this polish from it. Unfortunately, I'm also now in the negative on my bank account from lack of work hours, so I can't even buy the more-expensive bulbs in the hardware section, or at Walmart. GRR! That won't be fixed until next Thursday. :-(

And these bulbs aren't just simply blowing from long-term use. They just get hot and the glass comes out of the metal base. Sometimes they still work if the wires are in tact, but neither of these still had both wires attached! These bulbs literally fall apart, and so easily and quickly too! It was probably a duck or goose that knocked the one aside last night and caused the final "bump" to knock it out of the metal base. I imagine they were probably all trying to cuddle up under there because it dipped into the 40's.

I'm thinking about trying out the ceramic heat bulb, even though it costs $20, just to see if it stays in one piece!

And if all of that isn't bad enough, apparently the rain also brought the mites back, full force. This little girl (already near death) is covered with them! If I can get her back to at least breathing without gasping, she's getting a DE dusting right away. And if she can come back to 100%, I'll give her an outright bath with flea and tick shampoo!

But right now I'm about to go stir up some food to force into her crop with probiotics. She ate last night, but it's empty now and the last thing she needs is an empty stomach when she needs the energy.

DE is not going to cure your mite problems. You need to either get the Sevin's dust at Home Depot or the poultry dust Carcar was talking about. You need to not only dust the chicken but the environment the chickens live in, too.

I actually use Malathion in their environment. Stronger, but the chickens can't be around it, really. So I take them all out, spray it, let it dry, and then give them a DE dust bath before they go back in. But I'm to the point of doing that every week, and that's a LOT of chickens to treat every week! So I might just have to do the sevin dust while they're in there.

And a rare treat: This video was taken yesterday, but took ALL NIGHT to upload to YouTube (the internet kept going out). But now it's up, so here it is: the demise of a head of cabbage! Along with the glory of a mud pit chicken pen, thanks to the rain!
