YO GEORGIANS! :)

Oh...I wish I was closer to all of you
Same here, but I'm so far north I wouldn't be able to help. I'm really sorry about your rooster, CD.
As for the fox though when we let our dog off his chain near the chicken houses he enjoys going out to foxholes and peeing all over them. I'm not sure if it is his urine or if it's just his presence around their dens but they haven't been back in a while. He's the best predator protection we have, really. If the chickens feel scared they will all crowed into his doghouse or climb on top of him until it's safe.

Is there anyway we could orgsnize a coop "raising"? You know, like a barn raising. We could all go to CDs and build her a secure coop/run in a day?

I'm in! If you organize it, and materials are available, I am ready to provide labor. I also have some Olive egger cockerels that I will be re-homing, let's get the ball rolling.

I am very, very, sorry for your loss.
Sadly I may know the feelings in your heart from losing chickens to a predator. My experience led me to launching a trapping routine using live traps, and rebuilding the run and coop. I thought that I may trap 2 or 3 night time predators and be done, was I wrong. This led to me trapping many, many, coons, feral and domestic cats, and opossums. I have a few posts in the forum. It took several weeks before my traps were left untouched for two nights.

Thank you Prinette, Your thoughts are appreciated. The more that I read on this website about others losing chickens for no apparent reason is helping me. Now my concern is for my two older gals. We get our chicks and supplies at Ash in Cleveland, I think the chicks they have for sale are all heavy layers, maybe worth a phone call for the silkies.

Thank you very much I'll look them up and give them a call! :)

Well, after the disappointing candling and lockdown of the remaining eggs (24 out of 40!) last night, I am surprised that I already have pips! One duck and one BO so far. These chicks/ducks aren't due until Tues. I am thinking my thermometer must be off a little and the bator has been running a little on the high side, which would explain the early hatching.

I am just glad I didn't pay for the eggs I got from my friends....all but 4 were not fertile! The BO are from my friend who I have been hatching for all spring. Her eggs are good, but all the chicks go to her. But, I am also excited about these already pipping! I LOVE THIS PART OF HATCHING EGGS!

And, I am already planning my next hatch which I will set July 5 (for ducks) and the 12th for chicks for my big family reunion hatch! I am looking for true rumpless Araucanas, BLRW and eggs from Rocky Rhodes. Anybody want to donate/sell some fun eggs? Silkies or BCM, EE, OE?

Yay, ducklings! It's too bad that you had such bad luck hatching so far. We had the same problem and just shoved dozens of eggs under some hens. Our barred rock mommies hatched out around 30 eggs and are still sitting, way better than I could ever hope for!

Seeing as how I'm still pretty new to ducks I have a question. Two of my three darling khakis have been having voice changes since about two weeks. My smallest ,but somehow most developed girl, starting making more of a honking noise than a quack. Is that normal? Her voice seems a bit low for such a tiny little body. Also when should I expect their voices to fully change? My others are still peeping but ones voice is... abnormal, I guess.

I have hatched a few of my friends eggs that pipped at the wrong end. Usually happens when they are stored/saved in the wrong position. This friend didn't know to save them in a carton, pointy side down. She just saved them all in a big bucket until I came to get them. You probably already know this, but some on here may not. anyway, when eggs are stored with the air sac on the bottom of the egg, the air will travel upwards and sometimes goes right thru the yolk and you end up with a scrambled egg before you even open it. But, like human babies, some will just turn the wrong way. Hope it is ok

HE HATCHED!!
