Yes this is so true! Get ready Andrewspk51 for the chicken math to attack. We had 6 in February of this year and now we have 39.

I went to the breeder with my wife (against her will) and picked up 9. So far i have had 3 die and i am now at 11. I will be picking up a Silkie and a Salmon Faverolle this week. I am allowed to have 4 chickens in my county. Good luck figuring out that math.

Silkies are so much fun! I have um..3 white Silkie hens, 2 white Silkie Roos and 1 Black Silkie Roo (he was supposed to be blue).

We started with 6 in the spring and got up to over 40 (Yes, I stopped counting!) and just gave 10 of them to my sister! LOL Chicken math is insanity! LOL


So we got home and all is well it seems in the chicken world here. We really need to weatherize the coops more over the next few days I think. It was like it was fall when we left and winter when we returned just a few days later. As I expected, almost all my garden plants died because of the frost. -sigh- Thinking I need to multch over the strawberries this weekend and put covers over the lettuce beds as those are at least still alive!

Whatever broke into my cockerel/process pen came back sometime between Sun night and yesterday. Hubby thinks it's a raccoon. The original injured cockerel was missing as of last night and the uninjured was hanging around the other coops. He's too bully to let into one and in the other he'll BE bullied, so for now he'll remain free-range.

Getting youngsters to roost- occasionally I've had to go down at dusk and put the ground sleepers on the roost. After a couple of times of doing it they got the hint.
