Hey all ! Have a question, was given two four week old chicks, yes keeping them in quarantine, before I acclimate them to the other chicks which are eight week old. Hope I can get them all together in time, any suggestions ? Also on these two younger chicks is their any way to determine if one may be a rooster ? If I do have a rooster, once I determine if I do or not, can two rooster habit and be together, will be eight hens and two roosters or nine hens and one rooster. Thanks all for your input.
 
We have bears around here too, but I have not seen one. They need to stay in bear country, oh I forgot I'm in bear country

I really hate this bator I'm using, 4 pips, 2 hatches, 2 died trying to get out and still waiting but not hearing anything coming from the eggs,and the two that are alive have what looks like herniated umbilicus, if you can even get that in a chick. but one is closing up and should repair it's self but the other I will take to the vet on tuesday with one of my cats and see if she can put a stitch in it. OH I ALMOST FORGOT


I have a NN yeah!!! and it is the one not requiring medical attention !!! The NN was from Rocky and it said NN cuckoo Maran,
 
Aaaannnnd... I feel like the lowest worst ever d-bag on the planet. Got home from AL tonight & husband informed me we lost another chick. I did some phonecalls with breeder and with vet friend. That is absolutely not worms in their poo. They were overheating cuz brooder temp was too high. Despite the thermometer telling me otherwise. I feel awful. I basically freaking cooked them to death on a slow roast. That's gonna be some awful karma. I feel like a total baby killer. :/
 
Aww katiedarling don't be too hard on yourself. We ALL make silly mistakes with the babies. Especially during the heat lamp phase. (((Hugs))) So sorry about the baby!

Now now my friend, don't be so hard on yourself. the only thing you have to go by as for the temp in the brooder is the thermometer, and the chicks.Did they act like they wanted to try to get away from the lamp? not a lot you can do really if they're not showing you they want away from it and the thermometer tells you one thing but is wrong....

Yea, we've all done stuff like that! I remember posting almost the exact same thing when one of my earliest hatches went bad and I lost most of the chicks right at the end. I felt like a murderer! I thought I should never be allowed to try and hatch eggs again! So, just learn from it and be glad it wasn't some disease that will kill all your other chicks! Hugs!

Some may disagree with me but I don't keep my babies at the temp recommended after hatch, I keep them about 85-90 not the 100 and it does make them feather out faster and I don't see any adverse affects. Make it so they can get to a cool spot, if the chicks are around the outside of the heating area then their hot, huddled up their cold all around in their own world, just fine. I do keep a watch for huddles and make adjustments as needed.
