YO GEORGIANS! :)

The chickhouse brooder is 5'x2 1/2'. I have the heat lamp on the end with the door and the chicks have the entire area available. I've found that this helps a lot because on days like yesterday when it gets in the 80's the chicks go feet away from the heat lamp so I just turn it off until evening. Some chicks can be a bit ignorant and stay near the heat yet be panting! I just turn it off anyhow. Plastic tubs I think heat up a lot and reflect heat in too. A lot of folks use them but I didn't like my one and only experience using one. I didn't think the floor space available was enough for them to really escape to a cool enough area if they wanted. I'll use a cardboard box for the first couple of days when chicks are hatching before they go out to the chickhouse.

On a side note- this hatch was fairly quiet. Not much boisterous peeping. 3 girls and 1 boy hatched

Hey all, Have some questions and hope someone can help, am new to this. Have been given two chicks that are now four weeks old, hoping they are both hens but not sure is their a way to tell if one may be a rooster ? They are in quarantine now and hope to be able to put with my other nine hens and one rooster in a couple of weeks, any suggestions ? Also if I end up with two roosters can they mingle and live together or do I need to keep them separate, eventually only have one ? Thanks for any help Griffin GA

Hey there! You could probably make an educated guess on gender at this point, depending on breed. Some breeds are much more vague and for longer. Post pics and maybe we can help.
As for boys living together, the biggest issue there comes when putting two already-mature boys together. That rarely works. However if raised together or introduced when at least one of them is rather young, there is less chance of an issue. You'll just have to watch them along the way as again, each bird is different.

Good luck!! Hope your new kids are pullets!!

Some pictures of the new birds, they say they are yellow buffs, and think they are buff orpingtpn, not sure and not sure if one is a rooster. Thanks

Are the first two pics the same bird? If so I'd say pullet is believable. The third pic is harder to see but again, nothing screams boy to me. :)

So i just went to make breakfast with my silkie eggs and when i'd crack them they would just peel like a hard boiled egg. I had to use a knife to puncture the membrane to get the egg yolk/whites out. What in the world would cause the membrane to be so durable?

I am so sorry. What thermometer did you use? I use the fish take style brooder with the stick on thermometer you would use in an actual fish tank. I am not even sure what temp to keep it at so I usually keep it set around 90 on the hot side and 85 on the cool side.

Some accutemp one Igot at home depot. an indoor/outdoor one. I use them all over the place and they're usually alright. I moved it to a different location in the brooder last night and when I checked it this morning it seemed to be more consistent with how it really feels in there. I put the weaker chick in a separate brooder for the night to keep her protected while she regained her strength enough to go back with the others. She was quite wobbly for a bit and the other 2 kept knocking her down if they bumped into her and I would have to help her get on her feet. See was in good shape this morning, seemed happy even. They're back together and all seems to be ok. I am keeping a closer watch today, too. So far, so good.

a close call for sure.
