YO GEORGIANS! :)

Ok. Hatch is finished. Terrible again. And again in my new incubator! I have three gauges in there! Apparently they are all wrong. Of the 16 eggs, only 8 hatched. I candled them and it seems like the air sacks were only as big as if they were about 10 days into incubation! So, my humidity must have been running too high. I thought I was keeping it at 35-45, but according to the brand new hygrometer I just got today, it may have really been at 50% or more! Bummer! These were my bankers chicks! And, to top that off, the last one out appears to only have one eye!

I did the temperature test on the new thermometer and it is right on. I am now running the test for humidity, but that takes 8 hours, so I will know tomorrow and then I will use it. I had started those Lav Am eggs a few days ago and I don't want to mess them up!

Does anyone recommend a really really reliable temp/hygrometer? I own about 4 now. (not counting my new one!) And, they are all a pile of chicken poop!

I'm so sorry, Flower :(

ok so what was decided on how to control the flies?

@carcar
 I put my feed and water on bricks to get it off the floor
Oh no, I was complaining about the chicks knocking food out of the feeder into the shavings. :) At first I thought you were making a funny.

Flower, ugh. How frustrating. :(

I always figured my hygro I used in my Styros was way off too.. But when I got the cabinet I stuck it in there just to see. It was actually fairly dang Accurite. (Get it?)

This makes me wonder what my humidity was at! I used a LG incubator for my first time hatching, and got a 46% hatch rate with two dead soon after hatch. Decent? I don't really know. I kept the humidity according to the hydrometer at around 30... By now I wonder what it was really at!

Did you use an independent one or the one incorporated in the top of the incubator?

She is wanting something that would be very self reliant as these will be in her pond in the woods behind her house. I am thinking muscovies or something else along those lines. Whatcha got?
Muscovies, Runners, Pekins, mutts

yeah I would expect to have to buy some hay, I'm just wondering if I wanted one or two of the mini's like you have, would somewhere between a 1/4 - 1/2 acre fenced in with a run in shed be big enough? I don't necessarily want a boy and a girl.....and this isn't something I'm doing soon, but I would like to plan for the future
For every person that will tell you that is plenty there will be another one that says it isn't. With somebody like yourself that would be making sure they were doing well, they would be just fine there. Good grass, quality feed supplement, lots of fresh clean water available at all times, and hay (cheap stuff is fine) available free choice. Also loose minerals.

I've got fresh cheese happening in the kitchen right now ... half "raw" cow and half "raw" goat. Very happy to finally be getting to it. Basic moz-like cheese this time. Chevre next time. Might even try for some ricotta out of the whey from tonight.
