Ah yes, thanks for refreshing my memory- that's coop space.. And yes I could still fit a few more regarding run space but I prefer not to.. I just go by whether they look/seem miserable, and even with 10sq ft per bird I don't see how it wouldn't be crowded.. So I guess my "instinctual limit" is a tad below the "footage limit", lol

my coop is 15x24 :x and I have 38 Chickies...
 
I have a question for those experienced with egg layers. Not that I'm saying YOU lay the eggs,

just that you've got experience with your chickens that lay eggs, specifically young ones just starting.


so this is the third morning in a row, I've gotten a white egg, which I know comes from one of the leghorns. The first two mornings, the egg was in the nest. So yesterday I took the golf balls out of the nest. This morning, the egg was laid in the middle of the coop floor. I know a hen was in the nest, because I'd opened the people door slowly, leaned around and peeked in. She didn't get up when I peeked in, and I eased back out. I had to run into town for a minute, and when I got back the egg was in the middle of the floor. This isn't a 'she knocked it or it rolled out of the nest', it wasn't in front of the nests at all.

I'm thinking, either this is a different hen, or she didn't like that the golf balls weren't there. Although there are golf balls in the other two nests. I did put the two back in this nest, so we'll see if I get any more eggs later, because this was a bit earlier than the first two as well. Something else, the eggs each day have been a tad bit smaller than the day before. I know they'll lay a bigger egg as they've been laying a while. I'm wondering since I have three white leghorns, if I've actually gotten one egg from each of them. I really didn't expect a hen to start off laying every day, though I do know that's possible.

just for comparison sake, I've never used golf balls. Sometimes the very first eggs are in the box, sometimes in the coop floor, sometimes accidentally "scared" outta the girls in the middle of the run by the feeder. :gig

Often even the same pullet will try a few different spots when she's starting out, even if she started in the right spot to begin with.

However, they all end up in the nest box in the end. Just my experience.

yeah, I just thought it was odd she was in the nest but the egg was in the floor. I guess it's like when ya sometimes feel like you gotta go to the bathroom, then get in there and don't, but when you leave, it hits again a few minutes later. She apparently didn't believe it the second time

I'm with carcar80, They all end up in the nest box in the end. My RIRs started laying June 1st. The eggs were always in the run area, granted I had wooden eggs in the nest boxes. Then the BOs started laying around the end of June. Then gradually eggs started appearing in the nest boxes. So I took the wooden eggs out, once I did that, they started back laying in the run area, So naturally I put the wooden eggs back in the nest boxes, once again they resumed laying their eggs in the nest boxes. So I figured maybe they need a couple of more weeks to really get the picture! Lo and behold, I have once again removed the wooden eggs for the past 5 days and every day I have gotten 4 eggs from each of my 4 girls all in the nest boxes! So, I do believe that eventually they'll all end up in the nest boxes! Remember, they do have "bird brains" bwaak, bwaak, bwaak, lol!
