YO GEORGIANS! :)

Good morning! Not usually up this early, but I'm going out to deal with the possible mite situation in the coop. Before I go out, does anyone here know if it is safe to dust Stanley with Garden & Poultry dust while the vet has him on ivermectin? He gets the dosage orally, not the pour on type. I have looked all over BYC trying to find out. I know not to use pour on with it but I see nothing mentioning the use of it internally with the dusting externally. He's pretty itchy and miserable since the dose of benadryl has worn off.

And, can I just say, that never in a million years did I ever think I'd be up at dawn with a giant rooster crowing in a dog crate in my dining room.

one more thing: any ideas on how to get him to eat? Pretty sure he's been avoiding food. He's usually the first to come running when he hears me open the bag of scratch. 2 days in a row, he wouldn't have any. Then I noticed he really isn't eating his food. Seems to be faking. He'll eat a few dried meal worms here and there but nothing else. Right now, I don't care. as long as he's taking in something he can have all the meal worms he wants.
I'm curious why you're dusting them if the vet has them on ivermectin, that should take care of the mites on them now. They'll need to be treated again in about 10 days to take care of what eggs might have been on him and hatched.

The worst case of mites I've ever had on any of my chickens in the past I took care of with the pour on ivermectin. We dosed them all one night after they'd went on the roost with an eye dropper, stripped out all the bedding the next day and dusted the who inside of the coop. Waited 10 days and did it all again and never had another problem with them. That problem came from my inexperience on what to look for when I bought some laying hens from a crook on craigslist. his 'just started laying' hens turned out to be 4 to 5 year old hens that were already just about done laying and had mites and lice on them.

edit to add: you're just giving scratch as a treat, right? not as the main source of food?

Reason I'm asking, corn is a good cool weather treat, as it raises their body temps. Not a good thing to give them when it's hot outside

Dusting basically to kill whatever is on him at this moment because he's itching so bad. Yesterday, vet gave him a dose of benadryl because he was itching enough during the short visit that she felt it would give him some relief. Also, due to his refusal to eat anything, he wouldn't take the piece of bread I tried to give him with the ivomec in it. I will try again today, but in the mean time, I checked with vet and she said that dusting them right now would probably be a good idea if they're itching so intensely. And now since I seem to have a stomach bug, I know for sure I won't be getting out there today to pull everything out of the coop an do the job properly. I hate doing things half a$$ed, even if it takes 10 times longer. I got up before dawn to go out there and deal with it before it got hot out or started to rain. If I can stay out there long enough to at least dust them a tiny bit before I have to come running back inside, they'll be fine til tomorrow.

edited to add: I already had the ivomec on hand from when I had to worm the little ones way back when. (hopefully this time, I'll manage not to knock the bottle over and spill half of it out! That stuff is expensive and it should last forever if I can keep it IN the container

Yes, scratch only as a treat and not every day. I do know about the cold weather vs. warm concerning corn, so some organic scratch minus the corn has been ordered. I figure since weather is getting cooler soon (I hope), I can toss a bit of corn in with it when it gets cold out. The only scratch I could find readily available at the time I started to treat them was the Dumor at TSC. I won't get started on how much of a PITA it is to find something that you want/need from there to actually be in stock WHEN you need it.

Not to mention, I wanted organic scratch and I saw nothing on the shelf except organic feeds.

no what I'm saying is that the ivermectin should kill whats on him now, there really shouldn't be a need to dose him with that AND dust him. I'd spend way more effort dusting the inside of the coop. I've also, in the past, used a pump up sprayer with liquid sevin in it and spray the whole inside down good, paying real close attention to the cracks where the boards join together. Of course lock the chickens out all day until it dries good, then put new bedding in late in the day before you open it up.

then do it all again in 10 days, just to be sure

@GAMarans I you still have the blue boy from me, how does he act?

He has had his moments of questioned sanity when he tried to face off with me. He doesn't give me trouble anymore but the boy child occasionally still has an issue. Nothing major but still notable.
Is anyone else feeling under the weather? It seems like everyone has some type of virus. I know I do!
It has been ugly! I was so sure that I had managed to avoid it then it ran right over me.

On the Polish issue ... we've had 2 Polish hens here. One wasn't really notable as either wonderfully sweet or mean. The other one was a witch.

I understand what you were referring to. Clearing out/spraying down the coop was what was on the agenda today. Instead I'm puking my guts out & stuff off and on all morning. As far as the ivomec, he's being difficult about me giving it to him for whatever reason. and I feel too queasy to keep trying. So, tomorrow I'll give it another try so I can rectify the coop situation. I'll also be clearing it out & cleaning again before we go to Nashville next friday. If he's not feeling better before then, I'll be staying home.

so far, everything you have suggested is already on the to do list. No birds have been dusted as of right now. It's only a backup plan. He's the only one who wasn't cooperative. :)

start feeding him out of a KFC bucket and see if that straightens out his attitude..........

I hope everyone gets to feeling better soon.

I guess they are marans the big boys I have and I can't remember what my fav is but so far no aggression. The bird I picked up in Fla one of the ones that was mistreated still shows aggression and he doesn't come at me anymore since I tried to turn him into a football, never have done that to a bird before but darn that hurts and to draw blood with heavy jeans on, yeah it's a whole different game.

these are my really big boys the one in the middle is so sweet, he will let me pet him and pick him up
are the 1st and 3rd BCM's and @flower what is the middle one? I can't remember.

@flower how are the saddles working out?

I'll just stick him in the freezer next to the frozen chickens and turkey ... see how much his attitude changes after he sees them. LOL

"Keep it up mister, see that one on the left there? remember the day GAMJR got attacked and then you didn't see him anymore, well now you have............."

bahahaha

I've been in the run with mine several times since he tried to flog me. He runs when I open the gate to come in, then stands at the fence and crows at me when I leave......until I turn around and come back in. I should have video taped him trying to get behind the hen next to him on the roost when I went in and pointed my finger at him HA it was hilarious
