YO GEORGIANS! :)

Katiedarling, if you have access to ashes (like from a firepit), they are great for mites, too. Mix them in the ground where the chickens like to dust bath. I put them in their 'sand box' area. I found one of my older birds had mites this summer, so I added the ashes, Gave the birds a shake and bake bath in Sevins dust, and put dog mite drops on their necks. The full monty! So, I don't have mites anywhere now, thank goodness!

yes! I contacted my neighbor as soon as I was told we may have them. She has a fire pit and told me she'd give me the ashes when they have a fire next time. I may also ask my DH's ex-partner to bring some, too. He just put a firepit in their back yard. He's agreed to come care for the animals while we are gone. So long as nobody else gets sick. I'll stay home. I told my DH that if a chicken turns up sick on his watch, he'll just cull and be done with it, cuz that's how he rolls. LOL

I had ivomec on hand from worming the birds a couple months ago, so I did that and will re-treat after our trip to Nashville. I also went ahead and dusted the littles, too. They seem like totally different birds since, so obviously I inadvertently cross contaminated them. At least, that's what I think.

I started buying it back when Stanley & the GGs were in the coop for a prolonged period. Now that they are out in the run all day, they don't bother with the container much. I also have the three additions who are in the house until they are big enough to integrate (almost there. about 1/2 the size of the GGs), so it was mainly for them. I was going to build a little temporary enclosure for them, but then the elbow crap came up and the other stuff. DH bought those tickets for that show in TN next weekend, so I will have to do it when we get back. I was slightly annoyed by that because he didn't tell me, but I knew that he was trying to do something really cool and unexpected, so I think it's best that I bite my tongue, be gracious, and adjust my original plan. Especially now that I'm focusing my attention on the potential mite situation out there. Once that is rectified I'll feel more comfortable with bringing James & his ladies out to meet their future flock mates. Then I don't ever have to worry about buying moldy stuff from TSC. The grit wasn't my first moldy trip around the block with a couple of purchases from there.

I know I sound like I am complaining a lot but this whole chicken adventure has had a cool side effect that has come along with all the unexpected things that can go wrong. I have not only learned a lot about chickens in a short period of time (lots of mistakes made, lots of the unforseen, not so basic things that aren't covered in any chicken books at the library

), I was forced to get over some ridiculous phobias and also learned that I set way too many limits on myself concerning the things I was convinced I couldn't do. I also learned that my fear of the circular saw was completely justified. I knew in my gut that me & that tool just weren't a compatible match. So, no love lost there.

And much of that has to do with all y'all, too. Much encouragement and willingness to share what you know with a pesky newbie, all without judgement.

And best of all, Stanley Roosterface is my favorite little surprise. I adore him. Never saw that coming.
AAAWWWWWWWW your family your stuck with us

!!!!

I know, right? just my luck.

edited to add: Just got a text back from vet. She gave the all clear to eat them. I'm sure if they were on some other med it wouldn't be cool, but if the vet says ok, I won't argue. She saved Honey and the other 2 babies so, i trust her opinion. She hasn't steered us in the wrong direction yet.

You can also feed them back to the chickens just in case you don't want to eat them. Any left over drug coming out can go back into the chickens!

was gonna suggest this if no one else did. Especially stan the man, since he's kinda weak, he needs some extra protein!

congrats on getting eggs though!

on another note, I'm one up on you, kat and hannah........

here's what happens when I work on projects by myself. No one to help hold things in place, so I brace it off with my leg. An air nailer, nails that are about an inch too long and .......presto chang-o a leg with no holes in it now has one!

outside of the right leg, just above the knee...........gonna leave a bruise too. I HAD my knee against it, and lost my balance and had to reset THAT would have been bad bad bad...........
