RIR and buffs are cold and heat tolerant but any chicken will have a reduction in egg production in the winter, less light = less eggs

that would replace the heat lamp under the shavings? no chance of a fire? easily cleaned?

My Barred Rock has laid like a machine all the way through this far. She may have missed 4-5 days at *most* since the days shortened.

My young RIR started laying about a month ago. I'm getting 12-14 eggs a day from 15 of them plus a couple older gals.

I'm also getting one very light colored egg, thinking that MIGHT be my speckled sussex?

We have 4 BOs and a BCM hen. November we got 90 eggs and last month a total of 84. So, the shorter days did cause a slight drop, but 80-90 eggs in a month for only 2 adults is more than plenty. If you're adding to a bigger flock, the Buffs would be a great addition. They do have very dense downy feathers though, so I'm not sure they're totally heat tolerant. The cold has been a non-issue for them. Mine did ok this past summer, but I did have to bring a couple inside for some AC on occasion. Just keep a close watch on them. My situation could just be not enough shade in their yard.

I have lots of trees and some bushes they like to get under and take their dust baths etc, so maybe that is why mine do good.
