I'm debating something............

back in the fall when we had that week long stretch of monsoons where we got 3 ft of rain every day, I had to put down some pallets in the run so the chickens were walking on something solid and not in danger of growing webs between their toes. So when it finally started to dry, the pallet I had put in the small section of run where the sept chicks (now 17 weeks old) are, I just stood up on it's edge.

I haven't put them all in with the big ones yet, because one of my AM chicks has turned out to be a splash rooster, and carcar will remember the one leghorn egg that hatched, well it's turned out to be a rooster as well. I don't want to turn them in with the big boy rooster, so I've kept them separate. They've started roosting on that pallet outside. Now it's under the tarped end, but it's still outside. I'm debating whether I should go down and put them inside tonight as cold as it's going to get.

I've started another coop/run project to move the AM's too, it's just not finished yet so I can't move them.

So opinions, should I (A) leave them on the pallet (B) put them inside or (C) just go ahead and take down the divider and put them inside with the adults?

well they are in basically a three sided enclosure. The coop behind them, the tarp over the top, and thinking about it, the end of their divided section has a tarp hanging too because I didn't have enough fencing to go all the way to the top. I'm not gonna worry about them,I have a good start on the other, it's just been too busy and/or cold to finish it. Maybe I need to bundle up tomorrow and just tough it out and do it

All you guys that are falling apart don't worry they can put you back together but you may need to start getting use to some of the pain. I have lots of pain in the cold weather from old injuries. I had a finger cut off and pinned back in place, bone removed from left wrist and fusion, total right shoulder replacement, 3 back fusions, 2 heart stents, a pacemaker and more stitches than I can count and I enjoy everyday that I've been blessed to rise!

I once had a doc tell me I'm a glutton for punishment if I keep coming back to docs, but I think you have me beat.

These are the scoopable cat litter buckets. A friend brought me 24, and I use them for feed, cat food, and now nest boxes.
We put 2 1"x2" strips across the back, where there are notches in the bottom of the box. Then used a block of wood on the inside, screw went thru the block, then the bottom, then into the 1x2. The wood block is to keep the screws from pulling through.

how far off the ground are they? and I see no roost bars for them, so they jump in with no problems?

About 2 1/2 feet. We are adding a bar in front once it is warm enough to use tools barehanded.but I had a few eggs in them today after moving the comets over so they are managing.

Oh! I am so excited for you!!! I love hatching! Keep us informed! And lots of pics!

On a weird note, I had a broody hatch 1 chick on the 11th. I took all the rest of the eggs out from under her and put them in my mini bator after 2 more days and nothing else hatched. Then, on the third day, the 14th, another chick hatched and I snuck it up under the broody so now she has two. Well, then about 2 nights ago, I took out two more eggs that were similar in development (about half way) and put them under another broody who has been sitting on non fertile eggs for about a month!!! Poor baby. So that left two in the bator. I put them in there on the 13th and thought they were about to hatch then because of the size of the embryos! Well, nothing happened, so I figured they must be dead. So, this morning I decided to toss them. I just candled them and lo and behold, one of them is wiggling and pipped internally! I just can't figure this one out because they really looked like they were fully developed and ready to hatch on the 13th!!! But, I am happy for another baby! So, will let you know!
