YO GEORGIANS! :)

I have my new birds in their new home!!!
beautiful birds really even my DH said they are all really nice looking, that is saying something, lol and "mean chicken" doesn't seem so mean

checking out the new meat lol I have one leghorn roo that was doing his dance to one of the girls, not even in their new home 30 mins,

a few pics of what I managed to accomplish today before the rain drove me in. ALMOST finished. y'all have any idea how hard it is to put up fence, by yourself, OVERHEAD????

Let's just leave it at, I'm gonna probably need to pray a couple extra times before bed tonight

I just have the door/gate stuck up there because that's when the rain started coming down pretty good and I still had all the tools out!~

all the framing finished

wire over the top and on the side. It worked out that I had 16" to fold out as an apron

the ends, I pieced the wire to match, though I'm sure the chickens wouldn't really care, see my whompy jawed door? LOL

I had hoped to get it to the point of being able to move them tonight, but I didn't get the tarps on top. I have tarps to cover it with, and plastic to put over all the rest for the winter, leaving it with enough openings to vent of course

I would like some pullets. I have no experience with chicks. If possible I would like to stay with the orpingtons, those fuzzy butts are sweet

Well, I definitely goofed up pulling the early hatchers out yesterday.
They are all great, but the later ones have curled toes. And several that had pipped seem to have quit on me.

How in the world do you keep the earlier hatchers from climbing over and flipping the other eggs? That was the only reason I took the earlier ones out.

We're at 50% hatch rate now.

I'm also looking for a basic foam incubator without a turner to use just as a hatcher. Especially since it seems my next hatch may be split as far as date.
I'm getting my silkie eggs this weekend (I hope) if I can get with my friend to pick them up.
And my other roosters are finally getting a chance with the ladies, since I've moved good old Blade out of the pen since he was the only one topping hens.

what are you doing about the curly toes? I had one that had that and put a piece of cardboard (think cereal box) under it's foot with the toes stretched out and taped down with a bandaid. Also make sure to give some vitamins.

I hatch out my eggs in egg cartons. Keeps them from rolling around. AT lockdown, when I candle them, I put the lowest 'dip' in the airsac facing towards me. That way, all the pips will be facing me! They stay in place and as you can see, just zip out, pop the top off and come out.

Were any of these chicks from the few you had who had a curled toe? I wouldn't hatch those..but just eat their eggs.

We are having our first batch hatch this weekend by my calculations. Our silkie hen Ginger has been broody for a while. They are all under her. But when I candeled them, 5 looked earlier than the others. So we may get action today or tomorrow. Is there a way to know if they may come earlier. I looked at pics and can't tell. Will the egg move if it's time? We have been pulling Ginger off one time a day to eat and poop for maybe 10 min. Then she is back on. Not sure what to expect with the first batch of 9 silkies....

The chicks are close to hatching when you candle the eggs and see movement (usually their beak) moving around inside the air space. This means they have pipped internally. Will hatch within the next day or two.

I would not make the hen get off the eggs. They are monitoring the temp/humidity better than any incubator could. You could mess up the eggs by forcing them off of them. The hen will eat, drink or poop when they need to.

Do you have any way to incubate any eggs that are unhatched after a few days? If you have eggs that are different stages of development, the hen may leave those after a day or two so that she can take care of the ones that hatched earlier. That is what I am going thru now. Had hens add eggs under broody while we were out of town. Had one hatch the 11th, one on the 14th, one on the 19th and one tonight. There are two more eggs due in what looks like a week from now. I had to put all the unhatched eggs into my mini bator.

Feathers, 2 of the chicks that I hatched out from your eggs had leg deformities. Not sure if it is a coincidence or genetics.

I'm thinking it is genetics. I hatched a few with a curly toe. Feathers got them from me. We were thinking then that it may have been incubator temp, but now I am thinking it must be genetics. I would not hatch more of those hens eggs. Just use those eggs for eating.
