We just had our first hatch down here in savannah, 8 silkies. Odd colors.... 8th. baby was late, is still a little weak, but getting there.

It is getting time for me to complete our first big coop cleaning. What are some suggestions on cleaning? Do you all dust the coop, add anything special, whatever? Thanks in advance for the advice and help.

I just finished that job. I didn't hose it out this time because it wasn't very bad...usually do that about every other time. I designed my coop to be very easy to clean. The two pieces of 2x4 that block the double doors at the floor are installed with a couple of screws (the 2x4's are laying up on the roost waiting to be reinstalled. That makes it VERY easy to just rake the littler out into a wheelbarrow. Also, when I do hose/scrub it out it's easy to squeegee the water out and it opens up for lots of airflow so it can dry quickly. It's about time to repaint insides and out...guess we will do that next year.





Also have the brooder set up in the garage awaiting the 25 ISA browns shipping 2/29/16...this is the first time we will have had the ISA's...hoping for very good egg production from them. We are anxiously awaiting the new flock...! :)

If any of y'all are interested though Ive got like 2 dozen silkie and a dozen mottled Java hatching eggs that can go out this week
I had duck eggs too but I think @GAMarans is going to end up with those lol
 
I am getting really frustrated with not getting eggs! I have 34 adult chickens and am only getting 5-8 eggs a day! I have a light in the coop that comes on at 4 and off at 7:70. Only added the light after most of them finished their molt. When I first put the light on, my chickens egg production went up to about 18 a day. Now back down. I just wormed them, so may be a few weeks to get them back. I have up to 5 broodies who have either just hatched eggs, sitting on eggs or want to sit on eggs, so I can excuse them. But, honestly, I have some girls who are only about 2-3 years old who haven't laid an egg in over 6 months! The chickens are all big fat girls with bright red combs. Maybe too fat?????? I have noticed that the chickens I have gotten over the past 2 years are twice the size as my first group of chickens. But, I do feed them a 22% pellet/16%crumble mix feed. So, I figured they would be bigger. I know change can make them stop laying. I've sold one of their favorite roosters and immediately 8 hens stopped laying! I've sold several hens, added new juveniles, and of course the weather is cold and snowy. Plus the fact that I have so many broodies who scream at the other hens when they are looking for a nest! Ugh!

Are you guys having problems with eggs, too? It's just that I WANT MORE EGGS!
 
Hey guys I know its been a while but I just finished a big move to a more northern part of Cumming after my roomates husband passed and I think I am finally settled enough to want to try and restart my mini-flock. If anyone knows of anyone in the area (or even a bit out of the area because i am fine with a drive if the chicks are worth it) that has bantam chicks then please let me know. I am open to anything that happens to catch my eye so any help is greatly appreciated.

Is it a regular light bulb or UV based? If it's a UV bulb, UV looses it's special coating pretty quickly and has to be replaced every 6 months or so. Even if the light is turning on, it might not be providing the right light. (At least that's how it is for reptiles, I figure it might be similar for chickens)

ok, so you sold off the favorite boyfriend, and can't figure out why that made them stop? well, if someone sold off your hubby, would you stop la......... wait, that won't end well, let me rephrase that

I think it's most likely the worming. as shades of sable said, it could be the light. I just used a regular ole light bulb in my coop on the timer and yeah it has helped. I went from 11 or 12 a day to 1 or 2 every 3 days, now that the light has been in there a couple weeks, I'm back to getting 4-5-6 eggs a day from those 6 hens that are laying. The pullets in that coop are only 19 weeks old, and not starting to redden in the face yet at all so I'm a few weeks at least on them still.

On the other pen that I moved the AMs into.....before Thanksgiving I was getting 2 or 3 blue eggs a day. I wasn't sure if all 4 were laying yet, there was one I never saw much around the nest. So since moving them up to their own pen, I'm getting a blue egg every other day, and I know it's that particular pullet because I just watched her lay. I took the bucket nests out and put a rubbermaid container on it's side with a big hole in the lid up there as a nest. I left a 4" lip on the bottom to help keep the shavings in.....ha, yeah right. She still kicked them all out. I heard a commotion up there and went to check, Her, one other hen AND the rooster were all in the nest......she ran them out, and I watched her lay the egg, if you've never seen it before, it was pretty cool. You can definitely tell when she's getting close, she squats and would make any delivery nurse proud the way she could "push"!
