YO GEORGIANS! :)

I forgot to update y'all on the Saran Wrap chick! Got home last night and unwrapped it. The cotton had held its moisture just perfect! The only place baby was dried was right around its beak where there was nothing moist.

Anyway, got all the shell off (baby was malpositioned but otherwise seemed normal).. It had absorbed all the blood from the veins BUT when the shell was off its umbulicus started bleeding. Not a ton but I knew it didn't take much. So, I put a little pressure on it for a minute and got it back to the bator. It was very weak.

Here's what I found this morning!

It's super bouncy and sassy so it should be good. It does have one foot a little messed up so I'll watch that- I'm thinking from how it was stuck in the egg..? Anyway, that's the story. :)

What a wonderful success story. It seems you did all the right things.

I'd love to see! I don't think many of us are too squeamish, really. And I think pretty much everyone here is at least interested/curious in incubating, and that's just part of it.

Thanks :) It's so neat to see the new ideas we get each time we hatch, not only from past hatching experiences and getting a clear picture of the mechanics of the whole thing, but also a ton from what we learn from each other here on BYC. :) Take tidbits from here and there, and make your own way and see what you come up with. This is definitely a method I'll hold onto for future use. I had done the wet-cotton-ball plaster thing in the past, but as well as they coat, they also lose moisture very quickly in a circulated air environment.

OK! I can always pull them if people are disturbed.

Messy yolk, just came out like this. It also had some white specks in it.

The dark splotch. Large mass of blood, no more vessels.

Tiny embryo stuck to the shell. I turned it a couple of ways, but couldn't get it to move so i think it was really stuck. We've been turning 5-7 times daily, so I think this was due to shipping. A couple others started to develop close to the shell including the best one we have going right now. I guess this one became too stuck and that contributed to it quitting?

No worm or weirdness though that I saw!

Nice. See? Wasn't that fun? As sad as it is to lose an already-formed chick, those are amazing too.. To see at what point they have recognizable features, eyes, beak, toenails.. Even a color pattern to their down. I just love it.

Looks like the solid part in the lower portion of the red area in that last pic may have been the dark rod/looking mass you were seeing?

I've done searches for an hour about what is safe to mark hatching eggs. The results are about 50-50 on using a sharpie. I know some of you folks mark your eggs so please chime in and let me know if using a sharpie will cause any harm. I'm ready to mark some eggs tonight.

Thanks

Sharpie is totally fine. I've been hatching for over 5 years. I use pencil, crayon & sharpie. There are no differences in hatch rates no matter which I use & no complications with chicks no matter which I use.

It was! Now I'm really wishing I had done this on that big shipped batch I did last year where all but 2 failed to hatch. Definitely doing this on all the ones that are left after the hatch this time.

My TS is suppose to start getting chicks the second week in Feb!! Isn't that next week?

Not that I need to get more. Already have 20 coming! I will end up selling some, but will grow them out for a little first!
