unless your old coop is in really bad condition someone might be willing to take in off your handsWe put the chickens in the new coop yesterday! We see a few problems that will need fixing. For one thing, instead of ramps, we put in small ladder type things.....the chickens are clueless on how to use them. Beau, our huge Rooster, couldn't figure out how to get on the roost and was sleeping in one of the nest when we went to see how they were doing. We put him up there with his girls. Will probably add a 'jumping table' for him. That's what he had in the old coop.
Another problem is that the ladders are on one side of the roosts, so that if a chicken decides to sleep in the middle, nobody can get past it! That's what a 'jumping table' would fix. It's just basically a round top on legs. They hop from it to the roost.
Have been killing ourselves pulling the old coop apart and loading it on the trailer to take to the dump. It should all be gone by this afternoon. Will post photos then even though it's not stained yet and the front fencing isn't finished.
you could always lift her up a little and stick a flash light to it real quickThe first baby seems to be quite alright. I wish mama would eat a little, though. She looks tired and hungry. Hasn't bothered with much food and even less water since friday night. No water at all that I can tell since at least Saturday. I was able to get a teeny peek at the other egg under her. Seems to be still intact, but can't be sure. I suspect it's a dud. I expected Sat to be the day(21) but the first one hatched on day 22. I assume it's too risky to take the other egg to try and see what's going on in there? I feel like, if it's a quitter, I ought to remove it so it doesn't explode a stinky bacterial mess all over her and the baby. Do I or don't I?
one thing I do for mine when they're sitting is give them things like tomato slices, or water melon or canteloupe, something they'll gladly eat but helps with hydration too. Watermelon is the absolute best. just put the pieces right in front of her, she'll eat emThe first baby seems to be quite alright. I wish mama would eat a little, though. She looks tired and hungry.
