Wow, what a bummer! I just candled the 49 eggs in my incubator!

Of the 15 duck eggs I ordered, 3 were not fertile. That is the good news since they sent 15 and I ordered 12, that makes it even. Am excited about these 'breeder quality' runner ducks.

Of the 6 'replacement' eggs from the lady in Newnan (4 Swedish Flowers and 2 Chocolate Orpingtons) , only 1 is good. The others were not fertile., Nothing! That sucks!

Only 2 from a friends was fertile. I had a few of my own not be fertile, but I expected that since we sold most the older roosters and only have one that is old enough to do any good and have 30+ old enough hens!

All total, I removed 18 eggs! That leaves only 31 eggs in the bator!

But........I also have 31 chicks still in the brooder.....waiting to see what they turn out to be!

That is horrible and some chicks dont hatch in the end. But Ik what you mean I have one main rooster and the rest arent good for nothing because they are small so its one rooster 30 hens. Dumb minature roosters(still love them)

It said you had to have a candling certificate to sell eggs and then was an advertisement for the egg industry in Georgia. It didn't say what candling was for, why you needed to do it, nor how many eggs out of what you sold had to be candled. Same ol, same ol.....

You candle eating eggs to look for blood spots, meat chunks and cracked shells. And every egg has to be candled. It's a hassle, but if you are going to sell anywhere other than from the farm you have to do it.

The class is ok. It's informative and you candle a bunch of eggs with a partner.
 
In between every other project going on, I've been back at the Buckeye Incubator again. Got most of the hardware painted, heaters installed, and the egg tray built. Currently working on wiring the controls. Dang fluorescent lights in the basement make for lousy photos. Didn't think to change the settings on the phone. The wood looks much nicer in person.





On another note, I've always liked the Incutherm thermometer/hydrometers. I bought 2 more last week and all 4 of them read differently. Did the salt method to check accuracy and they are all off. So, I ordered a real dry-wet bulb thermometer to put in the cabinet once I fire it up.
 
An update on my Lucy (Buff) with the chicks as has Sally my other buff( Lucy is the dominant one)
. Lucy has definitely stepped up to the plate as far as the chicks are concerned. I go in a couple of times a day and sit with them, trying to get them used to me. Every time I pick up a chick, Lucy watches me like a hawk, and tries to heard the others under the roost. I'm proud of her. Ginny didn't even do that. I'll have to take some pics and post

As far as Egg Candling License, you will need one if you are going to sell eggs away from your home, especially farmers markets. You will need to display your license at your booth. Many of us also have our Poultry license which lets us sell our birds at markets, etc. (Of course, that has been suspended right now). Anyway, it is a nice class.

What's involved in the poultry license, Flower? Is it similar to the candling license or is it more involved?
