YO GEORGIANS! :)

Ever since my oldest (my baby girl) was killed a couple weeks ago, I have been dead set on not letting my other babies out of their run. I have 2 buffs that are about 12 weeks, who were used to foraging with my older one, and I also have 2 that are almost 8 weeks, and 5 that are right at 5 weeks. I would like for them to be out in the yard, I used to let them out when I was outside, which if I'm home is always! I guess because they are sometimes hard to round up, and since my Ginny got killed I am a nervous wreck to even let them out. I know that is not fair to them but I guess my anxiety and depression over losing my other baby has really got me scared. Do yall think I should let them out for a few hours a day and bust my butt to get them back in a couple of hours before dusk...or what...not sure how to handle this!
My oldest, the buffs, have sorta took over the mothering for the others, maybe that could help??

I totally understand. I have a completely fenced yard, but some places around the ditch out at the side of the property that those dogs found they could get under a couple weeks ago. They've made sure the dogs are on their chains/cables (which I absolutely ABHOR, people if you have to have a dog chained up to own it, they you shouldn't own one!) but I'm still hesitant to let any of the kids out of their coop/run. The RIR rooster is starting to grow tail feathers back already, one place on his back still isn't completely healed. I usually go up there after dark when he's on the roost and DR it. He doesn't seem to mind at all either, funny that they can sense when you're there to help when they're hurt

nothing else around the neighborhood has really threatened them. My older girls are really aggravated that they cant go out anymore and i feel bad about that!

You could let them out late in the day and then they will go in by themselves at dusk,

yeah now that they're used to the coop, and know where the roost is, they'll put themselves up at dusk. MOST of the time, raccoons are nocturnal, so by then, they'll be safely tucked away in the safety of the coop

My February hatch is now outside in the outside brooder they have a little more room and I went ahead and placed my bantam chicks at a little over 1.5 weeks out with them last night I checked on them this morning and all I saw was my bigger ones with little heads sticking out between them so I'm happy they all snuggled up together last night despite the rain that came through. Weatherman lied to me!!

Sorry about your lost =( I'm new to chicken raising. My 4 buff orpingtons arrive next week and I don't know if I'm being extra scared but I'm worried about predators. I won't be letting mine out to free range unfortunately.

Hey There. New to BYC and chicken raising. Grew up in Lithonia but just moved to Stockbridge last month.

Welcome to BYC! I was raised in Decatur, lived in Gwinnett county for years before moving to the mountains (after my husband's 20 year stint in the Air Force). I didn't know that Stockbridge was chicken friendly. We were just there not long ago for a surgical procedure, crazy traffic! I'm out of practice driving around Atlanta. As long as you have used a stronger wire than chicken wire, cover windows with properly attached hardware cloth, and have a dig barrier on your pen and look at any weakness at "predator level", you probably won't lose any to predators. It takes a lot of thought and good materials, but then, you're set.

I live in the mountains with every predator imaginable but have never lost any to them, even free ranging. Of course, my roosters and good cover from the skies are credited with that and I will eventually lose someone to an animal attack, but not likely inside their barn. Prevention, as they say, is worth a pound of cure, and it certainly goes for building a strong chicken fort! You'll enjoy your Buff Orpingtons. I loved my Golden Girls, though they've all passed on now.

I never stated my city. Im from Dublin. I sold out everything but order is on the way.
Ill have: Easter Eggers, Blue Andalusians, Golden Lakenvelders, Black Langshans, Brown Leghorns.
Also have call duck eggs arriving today
