YO GEORGIANS! :)

Hey fellow Ga folks,

How bad are weasels here? Any big issues. I'm now focusing on making my fortress weasel proof too but I just wanted to check with y'all on how frequent of an issue they are for our area.

I know it may vary by your region, I'm sure. I'm in Henry county, Stockbridge.

Yup! We have weasels in GA, and unlike raccoons, they can fit through chain-link and 2 x 4 welded-wire fencing. I've never seen one on my property, but I understand that if one gets into your hen house, it will kill all your chickens.

We have to deal mostly with raccoons, opossums, foxes, coyotes, hawks, and an occasional bobcat. The worst problem though is unleashed dogs. Our property abuts a large wooded area, so we get all kinds of critters coming out of there...including packs of dogs.

Chicken/poultry wire will fail against dogs and raccoons. 1/2" x 48" hardware cloth is a good product for enclosing a coop in GA. The 50' roll is $57 at WalMart and about the same price at TSC this week (It's on sale.). If you get it from WalMart, you will have to order it online, and they will ship it to the store of your choice. At TSC, you can just pick it up, but I would call first to make sure the store you choose has it in stock.

As for the long-tailed weasel in GA, here is a wiki on the predator:

good information.

Learn something new every day. I didn't realize we had weasels in GA. A while back, a couple bears were sighted close to here (Troup County), but none actually here. Wouldn't surprise me if they spotted some this summer, though.

We have it all, pretty much, including cougars, but they are not likely to kill your chickens. Roaming dogs like these I caught on game camera on my pasture lot are what most of us have to worry about, plus foxes and coyotes. Raccoons are more nocturnal unless rabid, generally, so a predator-proof night coop is essential. They can reach through fence wire and eat a chicken one bite at at time unless it's properly attached hardware cloth. Best not to allow them outside in the pen at night.
This pair eventually was caught inside the perimeter fence that surrounds our main property and house, but a well-placed bird-shot encouraged them to not return. And I had to find how they got in. Still not sure, but I know how they got out. One escaped under the fence after being pelted with bird-shotwhere water had washed out a low point and one, trying desperately to escape the crazy man stalking it with a shotgun climbed over and hasn't been seen since that day.

Bummer! My order of Oxine, the great disinfectant for the chickens, from Amazon is missing! They said it was either damaged or gone, they can't find it! Soooo, now I have to wait for a new order to come! They said they would ship out the new order tomorrow! It is suppose to kill Avian Flu virus, bacteria and mold! The birds can also drink it and it is suppose to kill nasties in them, too! They use to use it in municipal water to disinfect it, too. Anyway, I will be glad to have it. Can't wait to disinfect my incubators, brooders, shoes, etc with it!

Dang it! That's awful, but at least, Amazon is usually really good with their customer service and they've always rectified issues for me. For shoes and such, I also use Virkon-S to disinfect (not for misting or drinking water, I don't think). It comes in tablets that each make a pint of solution you can use in a spray bottle. It's cheaper to ship because it's much lighter weight, 50 tablets in a plastic bottle as compared to a gallon of liquid. With both of those in your arsenal, you're set for anything.

Lol same here. Never seen a weasel 'cept for a shady piece of you know what who was called by that nickname---- in Bibbco we are more concerned with coyotes, opossum & hawks. I do find that having two 80 lb labs policing (and marking) the grounds keeps critters out of my garden & yard.

for those who are building a coop and wanting hardware cloth, when I built my hoop coop, I ordered the hardware cloth on amazon, absolutely the best price I found anywhere. Of course that's been a couple years ago, but it was nice to let the UPS driver carry out to the building site,
