YO GEORGIANS! :)

I may have spoken too soon about the incubator. Got an email today and there is disagreement within between the board members.
Got to love small town politics.

So...I candled today for the first time ever. I'm using a Brinsea Maxi at home and also managing a Hova Bator for a school hatch. I don't even know what I'm doing if we're being honest. I'm having trouble with being able to tell what is going on with a Bielefelder egg and also with a crele Polish egg. All the others are vein-y with the little dancing blobby spots which makes me happy. Then there's this one Polish egg that seems to have a yolk and a white and an air cell and looks like nothing is going on. It's day 7. What would you do? The Biel has the type of shell that looks grainy under light and is hard to see what's going on. I don't want to toss anything that could be viable, but the fact is that the nice egg folks gave me lots of extras--more than will fit in the Brinsea and the bantams are still a little too big to turn correctly on the inner circle plates. I've been manually turning them, but if I could bump them to the bigger turning plates I would. If I sound like I'm not making sense anymore then that would make a lot of sense to me!! Ideas?

This is the polish egg

**edited to say that I saw a wiggly in the Bielefelder egg and now I'll stop bothering it I swear!!!!
The Polish egg is not fertile. By day 7 you should definitely be seeing some veining. I would toss it and give the room to your other live eggs. I do the same thing. I overload and as the infertile ones become clear (or remain clear!), I remove them and that gives me space for the fertile ones. Keep your eye on the wiggly one. They often stop developing at some point, but wouldn't toss it yet. Good luck!

thank you for taking the time to reply to me! I have been in a real panic since my mom has been egg sitting for me while we went on spring break for the past few days. My other incubator has 7 that I'm questionable on out of 21 originally set. I guess I shouldn't be too upset since I did get 6 extras that I didn't count on, but it's still early enough in the game for me to be a little bummed. I also have 3 air cells that are that saddle shape. I had them on their side in the Brinsea but read that healing was possible if put blunt end up....have you heard this?

I had a broody hen that hatched eggs last week. She ended up with 1 chick (2 made it but one got pecked by another hen - so down to 1). With only 1 chick - i'd rather not mess with getting chick food to it. They are mixed with the rest of our flock (dozen hens and a roo) - so any chick food that goes out there gets eaten by the big girls.

They free range a good bit (about 2/3rd of the day) - in addition I keep layer pellets in the henhouse which the chick can't reach. I assume the mama will break them up and give them to the chick but not sure on that either.

Any thoughts as to how good a job the mama will do in getting the chick fed?

That is true, but always check Walmart.com for price comparison. Sometimes, they'll beat Amazon or have clearance or used/refurbished stuff for a good bit less. I usually have two windows open when I'm searching so I can compare the two.

I do. Yeah, it's weird how sometimes one or the other of them will be grossly overpriced. Even on Amazon, you'll find someone selling something for $300 and then another vendor selling it for $99 like the price just hasn't been updated in 2 years or something. LOL I like Walmart, but only "sold by Walmart" on their site because if I don't like something, I can just walk into the store and return it. I've only returned 2 things to Amazon and both were totally effortless and free to return, so that was good. I'll also order something direct to the store from Home Depot or TSC for the same reasons, but I do my comparison shopping. It's just a lot easier and quicker to do it online instead of driving all over "hell's half acre"! :) And LaGrange is fairly small, but our traffic is HORRENDOUS!

Um, they didn't charge me when I bought a new game camera just the other day nor any of my recent purchases, either. What is funny is that sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. I rechecked and nope, no sales tax.
I guess it depends on which vendor you get it from and if they have a location in Georgia. It also may depend on the vendor as some vendors actually charge sales tax and submit it to the state of Georgia, but it's included in the price, you know what I mean? It's just easier for them to charge the customer $1 and submit 7 cents (or whatever it is where you're located) than charge someone 93 cents plus 7 cents tax. And you know a BUNCH of people who will take option one because they *think* they are not paying sales tax! :)

Edit: I see I'm late to the party as usual. :)

Yeah, we figured it out. Direct from Amazon sales get taxed. 3rd party vendors don't usually tax. I just did not realize how many purchases I'd made from 3rd parties over the last couple of years. I've had to return a couple of items and Amazon is good to work with. Recently, the seller just never sent the item and would never answer any emails from us. Amazon even notified me after a week that they could not verify the purchase with the seller. We'd already been trying to get an answer from him, but nothing. Eventually, Amazon just cancelled and refunded us with an apology, but that rarely happens. Hope they dumped the guy.

I've had this happen a few times. I just separate them for awhile and get a small bag of starter so at least, the chick gets some of what it needs. Even a pet carrier or dog kennel will work. A big box will work. Layer has way too much calcium for chicks and usually not enough protein. The only chicks raised with the flock were my Belgian D'Anver broodies and I let them all eat non-medicated starter/grower for awhile. Flock Raiser at 20% protein would be perfect since they free range and get animal protein out there.
