YO GEORGIANS! :)

I've had lots of chickens who didn't start laying until they were 35 weeks old! In fact, one chicken was 50 weeks old when she laid her first egg! (Yes! I said 50 weeks!) I hatched her from an egg so I know she was that old! Ha! Just thought I'd tell you that I did read once that it's actually better if the hen is older when they start laying. But, some breeds mature later than others. I think Marans are ones that are a little later to start laying, so just wait. I also agree with Brucifer, the shorter daylight hours of winter will take the pullets longer to lay.

Haha, the record here is 44 weeks, heritage line Barred Rock hen; she broke the previous record held by my 9 year old EE hen, June, who laid her first egg at 40 weeks. I was about to pronounce Zara a complete dud until she finally popped one out in her 44th week. I guess it could be worse, HA!

OMG! OMG! OMG! I went out to the juveniles and grabbed hold of the only 'Chocolate Orpington' I ended up with and spread its wings to see it's coloring and look what I found!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hahahahhahaha! The egg was apparently mismarked as a CO! THIS IS A SWEDISH FLOWER!!!!!! AND, IT'S A GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brucifer, you did mention while you were here that it was a funny color for a Chocolate Orpington!!! So, now I just need to get hatching CO eggs from you in May!

Yay! I finally got another Swedish Flower!

I'M STILL SO EXCITED TO HAVE A SWEDISH FLOWER!!!!

Brucifer thanks for your reply. I will take your rooster. Where are you located?
I am giving the hens laying pellets and my other three hens are laying just fine every day.
I just hatched 18 chicks out of 40 eggs this week.

If you want to see a few photos of the FBCM cockerel, here is the link: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/121387/yo-georgians/43470#post_18303807
He is from our 2/16 hatch, so he's got awhile to go before he's ready to breed. He's not dominant, and he is on the smaller side, but he has great coloring, so I think he will produce nice FBCM chicks one day, or you could use him to produce olive eggers if you cross him with blue egg-layer hens such as cream legbar or ameraucana.

As for your FBCM hens, it sounds like you're doing everything right. Just be patient. They will probably start laying soon.

I live between Villa Rica and Carrollton in Carroll county. I'm not too far off HWY 61. I'll send you a PM. If you still want the FBCM cockerel, we can make arrangements from there.

Yeah, one quick look, and I knew she wasn't a Chocolate Orp, but I'm not familiar with Swedish Flower Hen as a breed, so I was clueless beyond that. lol

Glad to see that your wish was granted!
