YO GEORGIANS! :)

@AfroChickens In my original flock of ten hatchery gals, there were two buff Orpingtons, Sunny, who was a lighter color and Ginger, who was a deeper gold. Ginger earned the name "Dora the Explorer". Before we got the perimeter livestock fencing around 2 of our acres that included the house and coops, she would regularly grab a co-conspirator or two and venture off the reservation. We live on a wooded mountain property full of predators, though in the last couple of years, we made pasture of a portion of it so it's much more open now.

Once we locked up the coop, only to realize that two hens were missing. At the time, we had about 3/4 of the fence in place, with gates at various points, including our driveway gate. Apparently, Ginger had lured Violet, a Silver Laced Wyandotte, on her adventure and left out a back portion, sauntering around the overgrown dirt roads that surround our property. They apparently had circled around to the driveway and found the gate closed, then continued on around, down the power line easement road, past another gate and on to the 3rd gate on the far side of the house from the coop. I saw something on the road while walking back toward the house from the coop area, called to my husband that there was a chicken on the road, ran over to find that Ginger and Violet had partnered up for a hike and were trying to figure out how to get back home.

The last time she got out, we had only 20 ft pf fencing left to go at one back corner. Of course, Dora the Explorer found the opening, went down the hill and was being chased by the neighbor's overgrown puppy. The teenage son was chasing his dog chasing Ginger and grabbed the dog before he got more than a few feathers pulled out from her tail. Needless to say, we closed up that last 20 ft pronto!

Ginger, the gal who regularly went "on the lam"

Ok, so now that I've been able to sit and really read this post, I want to say again with laughter tears in my eyes, :lau I absolutely love reading your posts.:weee I have 2 buff's that are a funny pair, I named them Lucy and Sally, and really they should have been named Lucy and Ethel. They are the same age, but Lucy is the bigger of the two, and she is the boss, or "Godmother" and Sally is her enforcer...LOL. They all still crack me up fighting over their position on the roost, its really gonna mess them up when I build their new one this week...lol.  I started out with one red star that i rescued, and now have 9...and wanting more! I have 3 Delaware's, 2 Barred Rocks, 1 Black sex link, and 1 Red sex link.... Someone on here said not to long ago that Chicken TV was the best, and it sure is! So glad you are enjoying your girls...

I spend more time watching the chickens than I do tv anymore it can get comical quite a bit! Love to watch the daily rugby match

You are so sweet!! I'm enjoying this however nervous I am. My babies at the preschool are one day ahead of my group here at home. These two hatched day 20 & there was one little crack in a shell when I left at 4:30. Hoping to find many more in the morning. There were 14 total after losing 7. I'll keep posting since I never tire of baby chicks!!!
yes, please do keep posting. I truly enjoy the different stages from egg to forever.

wow, you really are having an adventure Speckledhen. It sounds like fun and fears with the neighbors dog. I have a little Chihuahua that has learned that when she goes on the back porch and barks, all my chickens run into the coop. I have got to learn how to train a predator doggie not to harass our chickens

Over the years, we've had issues with that same dog and the son, who grew into a troubled 20-something later. He has since moved out of state and the father, who is an over-the-road truck driver either began taking the dog with him or leaving it with someone at the house, not sure who that was most of the time-they were not as diligent as they should have been because I've seen him at our driveway gate a few times. If the dog had killed Ginger that day, it would have been our fault for not finishing the fence sooner, but we were doing it in increments as money permitted, making an effort to keep that wandering hen at home. Still, no fault of the dog, but later, it was the dog who was the problem, roaming up onto our property, getting close to the chickens. They could never keep that dog at home and later, it reached a head as you can read here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/385404/trapped-a-neighbors-dog-on-my-deck-got-an-earful

It's ainst the law for him to threaten you but if he comes on your property and starts shooting you have the right to shoot back! That is protecting ones self if he makes threats on your property you also can have him arrested for criminal trespass! Our friend next door had her son bitten by another's dog well the dog is now in animal control hands and they had to pay hospital bill was fined and it will be a costly mistake for sure they thought they could rush the dog off and say that the dog wasn't here but I was there as a witness. And saw the car come up before the ac got there and whisk the dog off well the AC told them that they had to produce the dog within 2 hrs they finally complied. But what's so funny is the AC officer is their landlord!!! :lau

His father knew that. We could have sworn out a warrant that day, but we settled on a final warning. The next time, that would be the end of Brody the nuisance dog. Finally, it seems the kid grew up, but kids usually do that (not always, though. My husband's 62 yr old brother is still a petulant child who feels everyone owes it to him to take care of him, no matter what he does to himself). I'm betting the dog won't be around a whole lot longer. My original flock was older than the dog so that would put him probably12 years old by now. Hopefully, he won't get another one, but they usually do.

Good news and good news:

First: At 4 days old, out of the 16 chicks I hatched, only 3 are looking boyish!!!!! I will have to wait and see, but I know of the 5 CCLs that hatched, 4 were girls and 1 boy! Yay for girls!

Second: Today is lockdown day for the 12 Runner Ducks. I went to candle them before I put them in lockdown, and one has already pipped!!! Several others have already pipped internally! Wow, they weren't due until Friday!!! Hope I didn't mess up the one that was pipping by opening the incubator up! I try not to ever open the incubator as long as they are hatching.....messes up the humidity and temperature!

Anyway! I should have baby ducks soon! Will definitely send photos! You all know how much I love sending pics!! (Although, not a one of you commented on them!
