I'm so jealous of all your hatching!!! I'm a little over half way there and cannot wait!!! We got a lot accomplished on the coop this weekend--The rafters are up, and all hardware cloth is in. I moved the hoop coop to a new location because it was the only way to do a thorough clean up.

Side note---what do y'all like to line your coops with? Wood shavings? Sand? Straw? I'd love to know!!!

My coop has 4 sections. The outside sections have sand. During the year I mix either ashes from the fireplace, DE, and sometimes Sevens Dust. This is where they bathe. The two inside rooms have wood shavings from the store. DON'T use cedar shavings from the pet store!

Mylied, I hatched two of your adorable showgirls. A white one and a black one! I love them, but I know that silkies go broody a lot and lay such small eggs, they would not fit in with my egg selling business. I only do LF here. Anyway, I wanted Lisa to have them because she loves Silkies and I knew they would have a great home! The only thing I asked was that they post pictures of them from time to time!

Brucifer and DW, I enjoyed your visit. It was a good day.....the lady who brought back the boys was so happy with the hens I gave her! You seemed happy with the boys, and I am very happy with my BCM pullets! Thank you so much!

After you left, I finished cleaning the duck enclosure and DH and I added another 'penthouse' roost to the chicken house. After putting up all the chickens and goats, I wanted to go to bed so bad, but the new ducks wouldn't come home from the lake! Ugh, at 10 pm I was out there with a flashlight calling to them. They finally came up after I threatened to lock them out and let the coyotes get them!

Today is another grueling day! Finish cleaning the last section of the coop, finish painting the backside of the goats, sterilize the incubators and store them away, then start making all the beds (13) and cleaning the kitchen in the big house! Then we need to run to town to take the trash! And, of course, do all the regular goat and chicken and household things! Ugh! I thought I was retired and should be reading books in a rocking chair on the porch! LOL!

Oh, and the chick from the olive egg would most likely be black with some feathering on it's legs. (Those olive eggers were from Marans X Legbar)

OK, I'll inspect the chicks thoroughly and make my best guess. What comb type do the moms have? I think both Marans and Legbar have straight combs, right? I'm up to 25 now and I didn't get to see most of them hatch! I have my work cut out for me here with figuring out parentage!

I had two hatched this morning. This black one and a yellow one. They both came from brown eggs. So cute!

Sounds like Mylied is taking care of you; however, if need be, Lisa also said you can have one of her black or dark partridge Silkies if you want one. We're meeting with Marie in Villa Rica this Sunday to drop off the Crele Orp pair, and we could drop off a Silkie as well (hatched 2/18). Just let me know.

We enjoyed the visit as well. I bet your two goats have the only two-story goat mansion in GA! The FBCM pullets are from Skip's new line. I really like them. However, I have lots of extra cockerels if you want any!

The showgirls are doing well - very active, drinking, eating, exploring, so I think they're going to do just fine. Lisa was excited to get them.

We're very happy with the Chocolate Orp cockerel. He's very gentle, a real sweet one. It looks like he may have a lavender gene since he has kind of a mauve undertone coloring (Choc/lav), so we're going to cross him with one or two of our chocolate girls and see what they produce. If my suspicion is correct, we should end up with 50% Choc/Choc true chocolates (no undertone) and 50% Choc/lav (mauve undertone). Our chocolates are Choc/Choc, so it should be a fun project to do later this year once the cockerel is old enough to successfully breed. I'm also going to try to acquire some Lavender Orp pullets and cross at least one them with the new cockerel as well. (I've been wanting Lavender Orps for a long time anyway. There goes that chicken math again!) Since lav/lav is a recessive gene, if the new Chocolate cockerel is a split (Choc/lav), we should end up with half splits (Choc/lav) and half true Lavenders (lav/lav).

The SFH cockerel's coloration is stunning. Christopher is very impressed with the bird's appearance. We may give the SFH to our friend who is getting our other SFH cockerel, but if our friend doesn't want him, Lisa is talking about keeping him and getting a couple of SFH pullets. Like we need a new chicken breed right now.

As a breed, I really enjoy FBCM, so I'll gladly take that as a compliment to Lisa. Lots of times when our FBCM are free ranging, I'll come outside with treats such as air-popped popcorn or grapes. They run up and all at once want their fair share now as well as what they can steal from each other. However, one of the FBCM boys, Skeeter, is not like the others. He likes to stand behind me and honk like a goose for his treats. It's too funny! They all have great idiosyncrasies and personalities, but I guess I'm partial. lol

Mrs. Patmore, was hatched 4/15. I'm happy that Ava likes her. Oh, and I'm sorry that Lisa and I contributed to you falling off the wagon (not really...lol) with regard to hatching and raising more chicks. We are bad enablers in that way. They may have a Chicks Anonymous chapter in the Macon area, but the bad news is that the success rate of the treatment program is next to nil. They tell you that when you wake up each morning that the first thing that you need to do is to write 20 times, "I will NOT yield to the uncontrollable urge to acquire more chickens today." Sadly, it never works.

I have 17---it's not the number that I have a problem with--it's that the proper coop that will house plenty more is not complete. I do not feel like I'd be a responsible flock keeper if I added more into the mix with what I consider to be temporary housing. Between the constant rains, burglary and breakneck work pace we just haven't finished and as frustrated as I am about it, I just have to draw the line for the time being.

Chicks Anonymous here is only successful for those who truly want to change. Sometimes you just have to hit rock bottom before you can rise.
