YO GEORGIANS! :)

On another note... I'm pretty good at figuring out my own birds mainly silkies. At 3:00 pm on Sunday I checked my hen who was sitting on eggs marked 4/16 and there were no hatches yet so I went on my way continuing to clean out all the coops went to the store for feed came home and finished cleaning the coop I started before I left. Just before I came in for the night at 10:00 pm I remembered I needed to check my hen again just in case.. lo and behold all eight eggs had hatched.

Did you get your killing cone GoodLife?

Nope, we just used a rope. Not ideal, but we only had 6 birds and my wife held their wings to keep them from flapping so much. I thought about using a feed sack, but I only had the plastic/synthetic type bags from ADM that rattle like crazy. That's what I use to heard my chickens sometimes because they're scared of it. I was afraid if I tried to get them down in that sack and it rattled, they would freak out. :) I looked all over for traffic cones too, but I couldn't find one big enough.

You bring up a good point about their being scared of feed bags. I am not so sure it's the sound though. I've had my chickens startle at the much quieter paper bags too. I think it's anything that looms over them and creates a shadow. Your chickens have learned to associate the rattle with the shadow. Mine hear the rattling bag and know I am scooping sunflower seeds to sprinkle on their feed.

One the topic of killing cones, I've made several sizes out of sheet metal and just about always someone gets cut on the edges. Even though I folded it over, filed and sanded the edges. Unless you can get something thicker than what they sell at HD or Lowes, it's going to be flimsy. I bought some small ones for quail from Coop n More and I love them. I will be buying some chicken sized ones before we process this next bunch of Cornish. They are expensive, but they are worth it if you do more than just a few birds at a time.
I do use a feed bag when we process turkeys. I cut the corner out of a bag. Then take the turkey, put a sock over his head and tie his legs together. I slide the bag over him and poke his head out the hole. Then I wrap a few turns of duck tape around the bag to snug it up on him. Then I hang him from the rope around his legs. Cut his throat and wrap my arms around the bag holding him tight. This helps to not bruise or break the wings. Sometimes it's a wild ride!
Or you can bag him, cut him, and then sit on him like @GAMarans does. I've yet to see that, but I want to watch that ride.

I want to get together too! I never get updates on this thread. I'm swimming in cockerels myself. And I got 5 Cornish crosses to process. Bleh.

Anyone been to the McRae auction? I'm thinking of bringing some birds and goat kids. Just be done with the selling in a day. All these birds, kids, and piglets are eating me out of house and home!

I've been curious about that as well Jack. I'm interested in turkeys and geese down the road and the only time I've seen someone slaughter a turkey is on Alaska the Last Frontier when Eivin sneaks up behind their Thanksgiving turkey with a samurai sword. LOL Those are pretty big birds to just be grabbin ahold of, but I've no experience with that at all.
