Yogurt???

Sounds like you are doing everything right :) It sometimes takes forever to clean their bottoms, but don't get impatient, you just have to keep going over it so the water can soften everything up. you don't want to pull those tiny fuzzy feathers and pull or damage the skin. ACV in the water helps pasty butt also....I think someone mentioned it in this thread earlier. It is generally good for the chickens anyway. I use a electrolyte and vitamin additive to their water.

Today marked five days having our first chicks here. They are one week old, today.

We tried them on yogurt. Well, I will say I tried them on yogurt, offering it to them in a small bowl. They did not like it very well, and slung it off their beaks onto each other. I then tried setting the bowl down. They were very good - at walking through it.

My g/f walks up and dips her finger in the bowl. She added a bit more yogurt in the palm of her hand. As someone else previously mentioned, the little guys pecked it off her hand and finger.

I am glad to see we are introducing yogurt to them at the right age. I can't wait to do that again tomorrow - watch her get pecked in the palm of her hand, that is. :D

Thanks for all the input....starting to have an issue. The girls really don't like me and a few of them have pasty butt. I've been treating it but every day their attitude toward me picking them up gets worse.

When I first got them they would jump into my hand, but they slowly started running from me, when I try to let them jump in my hand they just peck at my fingers. Dunno what to do.

Well, just keep one thing in mind. When it's all said and done, you are at the top of the food chain. So, if you don't succeed the first time, try, try again.

At less than a week I had been giving them scrambled egg......which they are crazy over. Tried the yogurt and wouldn't touch it, so I mixed it with their egg and now they eat it just fine.

Do not get discouraged. Some breeds can become more separated from their human owners naturally. I have Leghorns that runs from me every time I come close to the brooder, while the other breeds like Wyandotte and Silkie do not bother with my presence. A warm water wash and some strawberry flavored yogurt as a treat afterwards should warm them backup to you and clean up pasty butt. Be sure to keep them warm.

So just tried the yogurt fingers! It was interesting - the Orpingtons and the Brahma went nuts over it! The Orps couldn't quite figure out it my fingers weren't a part of the treat. Americauna was moderately interested, Gold Star was somewhat interested, Barr Rock didn't seem to like it at all. Thanks - I was afraid to try it before reading your posts. I have given them some fennel stalks, uncooked Quaker oats, shredded chopped lettuce and chopped apples and the survived. Some of them are almost a month old and some are about 5 weeks old. Thanks for the tip - it was fun feeding them.

My two week old chicks love plain Greek yogurt. But only on a red dish. If I put the yogurt on a black dish they walk away. Who knew??
