i had that same problem last year with a few i got, the one bird with good color had a bad comb. i said to heck with it and got rid of all of them. i have been looking for a few quality whites to work with, but havent found any for sale. if you are willing to work with them then you could try to breed up the color in your pea comb ones and then try to get cusion combs, or you could get some quality cusion comb rs yokohams from another breeder to correct some of the faults you may have, and to bring in new blood which you will need unless you keep enough birds to carry on the line. I think toni-mari auston has some rs yokohamsDoes anyone have any thoughts on a potential tie between comb type and the red shouldered/spangled coloring? I have run into a potential wall with my RS Yokohama project. The original stock I started with last year (not good stock AT ALL mind you) had half the birds possessing a pea comb and the other half with the walnut comb which is the correct type for Yokohamas. My first order of business was to fix come type then work on color and then tails. I have set about 300-400 eggs in the past couple of months and have noticed a very strong correlation with wrong come (pea comb) and better (not great) coloring. Of those that have the correct comb type I get next to no birds with anything even close to correct coloring/spangling.
Anyone seen this in RS Yokohamas?

the import was in 2002.I have been working on these for a while. Toni-Marie does not really have anything extra to work with either. Her and two others imported some eggs in 2003 or 2004 I believe and from talking to one of the others that got eggs they weren't really able to get a got solid start of them. The birds they had also had a pea comb since that is the standard overseas, but even then they don't get much out of them. I got some good white Yokohamas (pea comb again) from them that I am using to cross in to try and get tail, and have also used a blue splash pea combed Phoenix line as a cross in. By the time I cull out the incorrect combs and the incorrect skin color then sift for color and tail my pickings are slim. I set at least 200-300 eggs a month from them and end up with maybe a half dozen chicks to work with each month.
good luck, keep us posted on the progressThat's right, it was 2002. I will get there. I continually hatch birds year round so I am pretty picky with what I keep. I am determined to sift out the 'low hanging fruit' by culling out incorrect shank color and incorrect combs. From my standpoint, fix the traits that are points for DQ'ing in a show then get everything else better. Doesn't do any good to fix type, size, color, tail, saddle etc, all things that are generally just deductions in a show if not perfect, just to get a bird that is DQ'd for wrong comb.
Thanks, I will get there
