She already has 5 chicks, a week later your hubby gives her 7 more and she just tucks them all under her like they were there all along.

And she is just a tiny serama. I went to check on her and all these little chick heads popped out - they don't even all fit under her. She just puffed herself up really big and spread her wings over them. It was really just tooo cute. It will get interesting when the 4 standard size chicks outgrow her

How do you know you have a good broody?

Would love other stories.

My silkie was just born to be a momma. she would take any chick you put in with her, she raised a cat and did not need to be broody to take on a chick.

The first time I hatched in my hova bator I remember when I put the chicks in a box on the table I could hear her clucking at the gate...next thing I know she is in the house with me on the table puffed out and calling for them. That bird was something else lol! I put them in the nest box with her and she took over from there.

My wife works for DHS and I remember us joking about the silkie hen. We would say its to bad they cant give her mothering instincts in pill form to about 90% of the mothers she deals with at work.

You know you are blessed with a good broody when she will eat from your hand while she's setting, she lets herself be picked up from her nest, will let you handle her eggs. And all without once pecking or attacking you.

Seramas are the best mamas!!! I have 3 broodies in the garage (used to be 4) one of the hens who was brooding her clutch in a coop by herself snapped on one of her chicks after about 3 days of being a good mama she decided to do this, she had 2 chicks total and altho she left the other chick alone I didn't trust her and neither did the other chick. I took both babies away from her and brought them to my little serama hen daisy who had only hatched out one chick, that chick was well over a week old when I gave the other 2 to her. She gladly accepted them.

Last October I hatched out 13 serama babies under one bantam hen (cochin, japanese mix) She too didn't have enough room under her to cover them all so she spread her wings and poofed out to look like double her size. Nothing beats a good broody mama!

I was lucky to be blessed with such a hen, and she lets us handle her chicks now too, but another hen gets too close and look out! I love my broody too!! I will keep her forever and ever...my husband even talked about letting her start another little family when our roosters are old enough....

I just found my other good broody sitting again yesterday

I sold her 4 babies two days ago (she was no longer caring for them)

I think I'll put some of my special cuckoo maran X black copper maran eggs under her. I'm starting to have people ask for those chicks.

This will be her third brood since April.
