You know it's a hard molt when.....

Funny but frightening thought!

Poor thing I'll bet she was embarrassed.

The one-feathered one also looks like a turken from the front. And I have an EE that molts first and hard, making me think she's on her last leg (she's old)... until I realize it's molting time.

Sorry Hi-Jack for a moment:

What is BOSS?

Black oil sunflower seeds.

I mix high protein feed for game birds with my layer when molt hits. It seems to really speed them through the process. I can tell they feel better with the higher protein as well. Same approach when all the bugs are gone....they cry a lot until I up their protein level above the normal layer content.

I'm glad I found this thread. My hen pen looks like one of them exploded--feathers everywhere! I'll get BOSS today and throw some cat food in there.
thanks!

I don't want my girls to be too naked and get embarassed!

when do they molt in TX, or is it the same e'where? And how old are they when they 1st molt? We have a pullett who has only one hind end feather, but its cause the goose plucked them all. It really affects how she potty's, and gets all over her, so I was wondering, if she molts will those feathers ever come back? j
