You know you love your chickens when...

I was so excited when my "babies" started laying eggs. My friends just rolled their eyes. One asked me if I was going to name my Grandeggs ( she is an old farm girl and thought I had lost my mind when I named my chooks.) Now she excitedly accepts eggs on a regular basis- loves the farm fresh eggs. and No, I do not name the eggs except the first. That was Eggbert.

You start with 7 chicks who are now 9 months old, and you decided to hatch some eggs under the broody but get to many, so you get a mini advance incubator. lol, 4 chicks under the broody and 2 from the incubator. Then you realize you want EEs so you go to the hatchery for 4 and come home with 6, and order 8 more hatching eggs...Husband doesn't know about the latest order of eggs!

All I wanted was a rooster 12 years ago. I just think they are beautiful and love the crowing. But he really needed a hen for company. And then....and then....and THEN........

Now I have over 50 birds in the henhouse including 14 guineas, 4 incubators, and I hatch around 300 babies a year!
Believe me! This hobby can get out of hand!

p.s. I love it!

I have 7 hens and TCS is setting up for chick days and I walked in the store yesterday w my hubby and got all excited .......and was told no more chickens and I started to pout and told him I have room for at least two cuz I just gave two away. .......now I have to wait for it to warm up enough to get a few ;) more.

When you're at the supermarket and strawberries are on sale for $1.99, and you put them in the trolley because "the girls would like those".
Edit note: no one in our house eats strawberries.
...and I also found a couple of old shopping lists in the bags today, apparently "chook treats" is a staple item on my list right next to milk.

I am a chicken novice but I already check on my girls obsessively (including 3:30am wake ups - no alarms needed other than the one in my head that insists there could be some terrible predicament in the brooder nursery I must fix…). I've also asked my husband to install a monitoring device (baby monitor at the least or wifi camera) so I can remotely monitor the coop when they transition outside.
But this thread has some GREAT IDEAS!! I look forward to developing my own delightful, neurotic madness in this chicken venture...
(ps - thank you 'potato chip' for the info on this thread)
