Well said. Some of these people also take some kind of sick pleasure in viewing/"exposing"/sharing disturbing videos and media involving animals being abused, butchered, dissected, that sort of thing. For people who supposedly stand against this sort of thing, some sure do have a sick fascination with it.

I had a schoolmate who went vegan and proclaimed the disgustingness of the meat industry, yet, she would spend her spare time watching YouTube videos of animals being slaughtered, while eating vegan "beef" jerky.

It all goes back to my theory about that type of diet missing nutrients that are essential for proper brain function. Loose screws.

A lot of this makes me think of people I've known who'd recently quit smoking, who are rude and obnoxious towards people who are still smoking, in an attempt to get others to quit smoking. They'll show them pictures of diseased lungs and spout statistics like they're getting paid to do it. Yes, some can be obnoxious i their zeal and misguided enthusiasm, but in both cases they probably mean well. But there are plenty of others, and I speak of both smokers and vegans, who go quietly about enjoying their new-found freedom, or passion, without bothering anyone. You just don't notice them because they don't make themselves noticeable. Those that are jerks would be jerks whether they were vegans or non-smokers or any other category you'd care to put them in.

My understanding is that anything that is not vegetable or mineral is animal. There are many classifications of animal, including: mammal (has mammary glands and suckles its young), marsupial (like kangaroo and opossum), reptile, amphibian, fish, and birds. There are also invertebrate animals like worms and slugs, jellyfish, starfish and different kinds of insects. This is not a comprehensive list by any means, just a representative list. But mammals, including primates (like apes, monkeys and yes, humans) are definitely classified scientifically as animals.

Humans are animals, mammals and primates.
But we are so unique; we are not like our closest cousons; chimpansees etc. They are also not our ancestors.
We have a common long, long, long, far-away animal thing and we split in 4 (more, others did not survive).
We human mammals and animals; are truely unique. Food; social, mating, repdruction; it's just not a thing to compare us to distant cousins like chimansees/gorillas/bononos/orang utan.

Chimansees need more animal intake then we do; orang utangs less;

It's even the same if you believe in Adam and Eve.

We went our own path in food and mating (we are number 2 in being monogamous out of the four; and our genitals and mating-habits changed over time to become more monogamous). We lost a tad of our meat-eating teeth; but do not have a plant-eating-teeth.

Since we are with sooo much; for a long long time; we adapted differenltly like Darwin's finches. We have made changes; but we are still humans. And can mate. And do.

Hoe gaat het? Ik vind de artikel informatief.

I think the Dutch inherently are more aware of their environmental impacts as they have been controlling their environment for hundreds of years!

My mother’s side of the family is mostly vegan/vegetarian and not necessarily for animal welfare, but because they never cared for the texture of meat. Also, with legitimate studies showing the impacts of meat-based diets on the planet and our health, they choose to not eat meat or to reduce their consumption of it.

With that being said, somehow kip satay and Soto ayam are still household staples for my family. And in the case of my mom, kroketten. By the truckload. Not for the meat though, just the spices.
I plan on making biterballen with Beyond Meat this weekend and seeing what she thinks.

I’ve tried borenkoel with vegan sausage, but it’s just not the same as the meat version.

Great reaction and loved youre review on Dutch food like boerenkool, bitterballen and kroketten. Here you can buy the vegan alternatives in the shop.

However, you're assumption that everything about food and keeping animals is better organized out here is not true. We have a big problem here with the health of people and nature because its overcrowded with farmers (industrial animal keeping ), cars, airplanes, chemical industries and the building industry. They produce too much CO2, NOx. And the soil is poisoned with pfas chemicals. The drinking water gets polluted with antibiotics. And the government is way too slow with unpleasant rules.
