The shotgun with birdshot may well make the bear depart, but will either result in a wounded bear for a neighbour to deal with or a bear that takes a long time to die from its wounds.

The older "bing,,, bing,,, bing" battery models, which put out a shock every few seconds (as the points on the balance wheel break) and the newer ones that put out a continuous charge. Many times the intermittent models are a lot cheaper, but we find that the time between jolts can just long enough for a bear to make it thru due to his long coat, often ripping down the wire on the way....
