Hello,
I have a hen (hatched last summer) that has sour crop. She has/had all the symptoms that I read about on BYC-huge soft crop that smelled sour, very watery poops, liquid coming out of her mouth, massaged her crop and there was definitely fermentation going on. She is going on now at least two weeks with it. The first week I gave her scrambled eggs mixed with a little plain yogurt twice a day. Also gave her wet feed a couple of times during the week. She had Big Ole Bird Probiotics in her water for a good portion of the first week. Her crop still was large and soft. Starting this past Sunday I put Sav a Chic probiotics and electrolytes in her water. I also started on Sunday giving her two doses a day of vaginal anitifungal cream (was in a post on BYC). Still giving her scrambled eggs with a small amount of yogurt twice a day. The post said to give it for seven days and tonight will complete day four. But her crop is still not going down, still large and soft. The only change I have seen is that her poops are going from really watery to looking pretty normal which seems like a good sign. Maybe I’m being impatient and need to wait the seven days or am I giving her too much-probiotics, electrolytes, yogurt, and antifungal cream.
The other thing that happened was that on the first night when I was examining her, she sliced the skin open (pics attached) in front of her crop because her crop was HUGE and her nail got caught in her skin. I’m glad she didn’t cut into her crop. I kept it clean and attempted to stitch it up myself after the second day since my boyfriend has been away and is away 17 days at a time and I can’t ask anyone else over during this time. I have never stitched a live animal up, much less, with it awake. I think I did ok by myself, left a couple openings in case stuff needed to drain. I used sewing thread. I plan on ordering the right thread to keep in the first aid kit. The wound is doing quite well. I have her secluded from the rest of the flock. Didn’t want them picking at the wound and wanted her drinking the special water. Also didn’t want her eating too much so that her crop wouldn’t stretch out with the stitches in there. She use to be skittish but now pecks at my feet waiting for me to give her the scrambled eggs. She isn’t lethargic at all, tries jumping for her food while I’m getting it ready. I let her out of her area the other day to get some exercise for a bit.
Info about my flock- I have 44 birds that free range whenever the weather allows.
Anything else I should try or maybe take out? I started my flock five years ago and this is my first case of sour crop.
Thank you for reading my long write up. At some point I have to post necropsy photos from two birds that died last year to ask what the heck was wrong with them.
