I have a week-old hatchery d'Uccle that seemed a little bit "down" when I fed this morning. It just acted tiered and for the most part, kept one eye closed. To make sure it was staying hydrated, I held it to the water and it drank twice.
This evening, it keeps doing a motion that looks like a yawn. Also, both of its eyes are closed now..
What can I do!? This chick is very special to me

Thanks!

Poor little thing!

Have you checked to see if it might have something stuck in its throat/craw?

We hatched a little duckling out of a young ducks egg-so it was small-and fed it chick starter. It choked on one of the pieces and acted like it was yawning, my daughter was able to fish it out. It was lodged at the back of it's throat.

Otherwise, I don't have any more advice, I am sure someone more knowledgeable than I will come along.

(Said a prayer for your little chickie!)

Let us know how it does.

Thank you, Patches

I used a dropper and gave it a few drinks of electrolytes.... I guess I will just keep an eye on it - and let you all know if anything changes

Update:
He/she is starting to keep it's mouth open, and I think it may have under-developed lungs (as suggested by another BYC member). It did get up and eat a bit, it was also scratching around in the bedding with another chick.... So, it may be improving....

you may want to do this

It is vitamin B complex and vit E
you need to crush the 1/2 pill VIT B complex
give 1/2 pill twice a day

you can also make wet mash with brewers yeast in it and will help the chick it is vit B
vit E you can take a huans vit E 1000 mg capsule (cut end and put in wet mash)
or cut end of vit E capsule and put in mouth of chick till it all goes in

I would use some apple cider vineager in their water
2 tsp per gallon
it will help the digestion of the feed
go according to what you need for the amt of chicks
one chick
1 cup of water
1/2 tsp of apple cider vineager

Is the feed fairly new in the bag?
The feed stores this time of yr get rid of the old feed they kept or didn't sell last fall

I believe the chicks need Vit E and B complex
do this by adding 1 Vit E 1000 mg unit
cut capsule at end and put in probiotic wet feed
now take 1/2 vit B complex tablet and crush it in tablsp and add to the probiotic wet mash
do this for two times this week
and twice next week
and then once a week till you see some improvement in the chicks

I would make a
probiotic wet mash for them

1 qt of dry crumbles
2 qts of milk
either fresh, sour ( made by adding 2 tbsp of ACV to gallon of milk) or buttermilk
1/8 cup of yoguart non flavored kind
mix good and feed chicks all this 2 tsp per chick
any not used put in frig

and feed next day this also
after they eat it in 20-30 minutes clean feeder out and restock dry crumbles

ONE CHICK AMOUNT
1/4 cup dry crumbles
1/2 cup of milk
1 tbsp of yoguart
mix and feed for the day
clean up and get new feed for the night or morning
feed till chick is bettere
Hope thishelps your chick
