Young chickens avoiding the older ones.

Hey everyone, or four 7 weeks old girls won’t go into the coop at night with the older girls. They will just stay outside and I have to push them in the door at night. Is this normal or is there something I can do to help them. They are in the coop separated with the look but don’t touch method. But they can come and go as they please because there is a hole for the little one to get to their side whiteout the big ones getting to them. Also when the free range together the little ones do there own thing while the big girls do their thing. I was hoping the big girls would show the little ones to come in and out and know when to run to safety.

Welcome to BYC. They may still be learning the way into the coop or the larger birds may be intimidating them. In time they will work things out.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens they need to be placed inside on roosts to start
I agree with Sour they are young show then where you want them maybe the coop is not big enough for all of them?

Unless the adult is their mother, the bigs won't 'show' the littles how things are done. They have to figure it out on their own. They will given time.

Hi again! How many older hens do you have? You might try sitting out by the coop in the evening for a few days, watch to see if the big girls are keeping the chicks from going in to roost. Good luck!
