I just picked up a 5 month old cockerel from Mr John Fitzgerald yesterday, and today I noticed he has a little bit of a rattling sound when he breathes...I talked to Mr Fitzgerald about it and he said it was likely caused by being moved into fresh shavings (the dust) and nothing to worry about as long as he is acting fine and doesnt have any discharge from his nostrils. He is definitely full of pizz and vinegar, and acts fine. Any other thoughts? I was told that I can give him a 1/4 cc of LA-200 but how exactly do you give a chicken a shot? This is a silkie and its kind of hard to find skin, lol...I was also told you can get some teramycin and put in the drinking water but I havent been able to find any in our local stores...any ideas or thoughts? I like this little cockerel and dont want to lose him..

First off, I'm sure you quarantined him, right?
Next, boy, it's really hard to know what to treat when you don't really know what you're dealing with. It could be multiple things causing the rattling ad not all antibiotics will treat all of the different illnesses.
Does he have any other symptoms?

He is not quarantined as all my birds came from the same place all within the same month, and were raised on the place, the same barn, and most of them came from the same pen. None of the others are showing any other symptoms, and he acts fine, only the rattly breath. He is plenty fiesty, gets around good, I havent seen him eat or drink but I cant be there all the time....all I can say is he acts just like all the other chickens, other than than the rattling sound...

Any other thoughts or advice? How am I supposed to know how to treat it? And is it something to worry about if he shows no other symptoms? Would taking him with me to a chicken get together be a problem if he is kept in a cage away from other chickens?

i hate to say this but get rid of it ASAP, i lost my second chicken today that started with a little cough. it will spred to others, good luck, its not worth the chance of loosing all your chickens.

this cockerel isnt coughing, just a little rattling sound when he breaths, and he acts good other than that. There is no drainage from his nostrils, and his eyes are clear as a bell, and he is definitely full of vinegar, just try to catch and hold him, lol...he does it worse when he is excited...you have to be real close to him to hear it...

anyone have any thoughts on a young cockerel that I just got that has a little rattling in his breathing? He acts fine, looks fine, and is full of fire. He came from the same place and pen that all my other chickens came from and none of the others are doing it. ???
