Young duck laying shell-less eggs

Everything in my yard is planted with something or mulched, so thankfully I don't have to deal with mud. If I see it, I cover it up with mulch. I can tell, however, that the soil below that mulch is really saturated and that if I weren't covered, I'd have one giant, mud pit.

We are STILL getting rain. Luckily it's not torrential. I do wish that mother nature would turn that spigot off. I'm trying to start my summer garden and with all this rain, and no sun, my seedlings are going nowhere fast.

Mulch, that would be nice.

I'm trying to plant more perennial edibles, so this year I've planted Egyptian Walking onions, Lovage, Alpine Strawberries, Anise Hyssop, Serviceberries, Lemon Balm, Longevity Spinach, Pepino, Elderberries, and some currants and gooseberries (although I don't think we get enough cold here, but I wanted to plant them anyway.) I've also sowed all my normal annuals too: Tomatoes, Squash, Lemon and Thai Basil, Beets, Shiso, Parsley, Dill, Squash, Runner Beans, Cucumbers, Bell peppers, Fennel and lots of flowers. I'm also trying to grow Pigeon peas and Asparagus from seed. All the plants usually attract lots of bugs, which are good for hungry duck tummies. So far the ducks haven't destroyed any of my seedlings. This year I've learned that those $1 wire waste baskets from the dollar store are great for keeping young plants safe from the ducks until they get more established.
