Hello fellow chicken keepers, wondering if anyone can help me solve my little mystery here. My hen, a Starlight Green Egger (first pic attached) was the first of her batch to start laying, around 17 weeks. She laid several eggs in succession, each getting bigger until they were nearly normal size (pic attached to show size). One night about 10 days or more ago, when I let them out to free range a bit, I saw her in the classic penguin hunched up pose. I went near her, and saw there was a softshell egg near her, as well as an egg with no shell. Since then, she has not begun laying again.
I’m home after surgery, so I’ve been keeping a very close eye on them. She exhibits no signs whatsoever of any distress. She is eating, drinking, pooping, and otherwise acting like a normal young, healthy hen, but no eggs since then. She shows all the signs of being in lay, but again, no egg. I’ve checked the coop and run thoroughly and there is no sign of a clutch somewhere else, and no signs of egg eating. She is on a 16% layer feed and has free access to oyster shell. We have six nest boxes for 15 hens. There has been no predator attack or anything like that and she’s not being bullied by my older girls. What gives? Any ideas?
