I have a young pigeon that was not putting any weight on his leg when I went to check on them today. He's just started flying so I think he must of fell or another pigeon pushed him off something. He can still move it and I have separated him from the rest with some chick starter (for energy for healing). I felt up his leg for break/swollen areas, but didn't find any. The last young pigeon that stopped putting weight on his leg had a broken toe, but that healed on it's own. Should I let it heal on it's own or what? He's healthy otherwise.
Thanks!

If there is no swelling, and you can't feel any breaks.. then just give him rest in a cage for a week or so.

Don't let him fly about and keep landing on it.. that will slow up the healing.

Sometimes they can just sprain a leg.. rest is the best!

Its important to check the bottom of his feet. Sometimes if they cut their foot, or get something stuck to the bottom of their foot (like dried poop or some thread) they won't use that foot much.

They can get a Salmonella infection which can make them go lame on one leg. But then he would have runny green poops and look sick. If he seems healthy then I would not worry.

Hope the little guy is better soon!

Thanks! He seems healthy. He's a West of England so the only way to check his feet is to look at the bottom of them. His feathers cover the rest. I'll wait and see what happens.

Maybe he has a thread or string or something like that on his foot.. or something stuck in.

You can carefully trim the feathers off the feet... breeders often do this to keep them clean. They will grow back.
