Thanks for your response! I'll look into packing gauze. Definitely filling the hole with lots of antibiotic gel. And doing it twice daily. The red-pink color has diminished.. looks good and hes acting better. Even in this heat.

I'm ganna check the porch he likes... it's an old shovel handle, not sure what might be rubbing his breast bone.. maybe its just needs replacement and is too dirty

Possibly a hardened abscess by the look of it and how you described the removal of it. But I’m no vet. They make abscess packing gauze for humans but I’m not sure if that would work for a chicken? Perhaps call the local vet and run it by them and see what they say?

Breast blisters, which can form an abscess, are common on chickens who roost on a rough roost, or who sleep on the ground. Cleaning it out to get out any pus, and packing the wound with antibiotic ointment daily.

That's what popped into my head whenever I saw the picture too.
