Young Rooster with old hens?

Otherwise, let chickens be chickens, it sometimes takes time for the pecking order to be established. And Chickens Really is right, separating does just prolong the natural process. It's hard to watch, but if you keep him it's necessary. I had to watch my Rhode island ladies and my Isa browns go through it..... It took time.

Yes he was breeding her, he is eight months old. I have him separate right now to hopefully cool his jets for awhile. I didn't like seeing her hide in the coup. Thanks for the tips I have done all these things. This has been a hard decision for me.

It's hard to watch for sure....they can be vicious.
He may just be a 'bad bird' and needs to move on.

I would be for protecting my old hen. I don't believe in letting them be terrorized by an over eager young male. If this goes on she will end up being killed by him or the younger hens. If the rooster doesn't improve his behavior he would become supper.

Don't get me wrong, I love roosters and I have a lot of them. I understand how a person can get attached to them. But it's just as easy to love a good rooster as it is a problem one.

I don't think he's a bad Rooster just young and full of hormones. I want my old hens to continue to have their happy life. Wondering if they would like having a Roo around after awhile or if they would vote he needs to go.

Giving him a 'time out' in jail for a few days may help. But I won't keep a rooster that rapes a hen. A good rooster will court the hen and win her over. The hens will enjoy having a 'man' around. The good behavior starts at a young age just like bad behavior. I understand how you feel about your boy. I've had my heart broken many times by roosters that I really wanted to keep. But sometimes you have to do what's best for your girls.
Regardless of what you do with him you do need to protect the hen that is being terrorized. I hope it works out where you can keep him. I just wanted you to know what I have learned from years of having roosters.

Thank you! I've yet to see a Roo not chase the girls and breed rather they liked it or not. That would be so nice!

View attachment 1272288 I purchased some Jubilee Orpington chicks I ended up with three hens and one Rooster when they were old enough they joined the flock of four older hens. My sweet fair ruling hen Heidi was eventually knocked off her throne when the Roo got old enough. Not only did he chase her down put when he was holding her down the jubilee hens would attack her so she was knocked way down the pecking order. To stop this I separated the Roo and one of his hens with him. Things are going good but gets a bit ruff I let the hen out but I think will calm down in time. I let the Roo out and he seems to breed Heidi the most because she's so submissive And She hides in the coup. I'm torn on keeping the Roo or not I do like him I raised him and he is a good boy just wants to breed a lot being only eight months old. So asking for opinions, will the old hens eventually like him or be happier without a Roo?

This is my problem also. i have a 4 year old hen along with my 5month old hens that are his age he prevents her from eating and chases her out from the corner of the coop . and tries to peck at her. i have a bond with her , but he is a good protector for the girls , i just dont like how he treats my old hen.

The question about how long to wait was really never answered. I have a similar situation and have been trying to be patient before making a hasty decision. Would you go a week waiting for them to get established, a month, half a year? I personally am at 2 weeks, have seen signs of improvement, just to watch it disappear in one action.
