My rhubarb normally dies back at this time of year and comes back in the spring.

These are all seedlings. They make it through their first summer with me babying them, make it through their first winter, but never make it through their 2nd summer. Maybe I should plant them in the fall?

At the end of their second summer they should appear to be dying back in late summer. They should come back the next spring if you don't disturb where their roots are.

Even well established rhubarb will die if not given enough water.

Speaking of rhubarb... The Japanese beetles are chewing on mine! I don't think I've ever seen them on it before, and I would have thought all the oxalic acid would be more than they can handle.

And another thing. I bought what was labeled "Canada Red," and the stems are green. This is its first year; it was a nearly dead crown when I bought it. (It's the only one of the 3 I bought to make it.) Does the green color mean that it's Victoria instead of Canada Red?

The collard plants are outside to harden off. The cabbage and broccoli are in the greenhouse waiting to be put outside today. I have to cover these at night to keep the deer out of them.

I may be picking butterbeans again and possibly some greenbeans. Still doing cleanup to be ready for the fall garden. When the brassicas are planted hopefully will be able to slow down a little as the weather cools.

I know that feeling! On the weather report, they said we are going to have "false fall" this week. Like we have False Spring in March.

I have SOOOOO much garden cleanup to do.

Foggy and cool (54°F) this morning. Feels like fall.

Found two honeydews that were past being ripe. The poultry didn't care.

Looks like a Leopard frog. We have the southern variety here.
