I also could place a cattle panel trellis over the bed and add clear plastic, to extend the season.

I'd try covering when it gets cold. They are very hardy but heads will burn under heavy frosts.I planted mine late. I can always feed them to the chickens.

I was going to plant them earlier, but between my trip to CT (funeral) and then being sick for a week, I lost so many opportunities to plant. Then when I did finally plant it was so dry that the seeds didn't sprout, even with watering. I had to replant.I'd try covering when it gets cold. The hardest part of fall gardening here is starting plants in the heat. As days get shorter growth gets slower. But not so many bugs! That's a plus.
I used to buy bareroot starts at a local ace hardware. A bundle was a couple dollars. They do pretty good. Now, I start them inside under lights late July. This seems to work best for me. Gives them a headstart before the days shorten up so much.
I have still not tried fall planted sweet peas. Love to hear how yours do this year.Sweet peas are blossoming, turnips are getting big. Plus, my second sowing of carrots is up...and we're finally getting a good, steady, soaking rain!!!!
The frogs have been singing here.I have still not tried fall planted sweet peas. Love to hear how yours do this year.
I think I have swallowtail caterpillars doing their thing where I had planned to plant carrots. I may have to find a new spot.
Rain!It filled my birdbath yesterday. The birds and squirrels seemed happy about that.
