Your 2026 Garden

I have a small patch of garden set aside for the garlic because it won't get harvested until late June to mid July. Then I plant something easy in the spot, last year I did more green beans. You can also harvest the garlic scapes so it's like getting two harvests out of one plant
Gotcha so I wonder if that's what my problem was I only tried garlic for the first time last year and I planted my sets in early May with everything else in my garden and by our first hard freeze 1st week of October there were no good size bulbs to speak of so I wonder if I just didn't give them enough time

Garlic needs to be vernalized (kept cold for a long period, usually through winter) to produce bulbs. That’s why it’s usually planted in the late fall. I’m told you can shove a couple bulbs in the fridge to vernalize them that way.

Gotcha so it's similar to cold stratification for my perennial seeds. That makes total sense! which explains why they didn't work at all last year for me LOL I'll have to try again next fall!

Getting blueberry and raspberry bushes to add to the garden this year 🥰 :wee
Get at least two different kinds of blueberry bushes. They cross pollinate with each other and if you get two of the same kind, the berries will be small

Sorry about the multiple quotes/answers..
What garlic do you buy? I want to try some. We'd be in similar zones too.
Music has been fantastic for me. Very big cloves, usually 4 or 5 big cloves.

I'll try to do overwintered garlic and put it in the fall this year!

So you planted in the fall before the first Frost and then how long do you have to wait in the spring before you can use that space for your regular summer garden stuff?
Yes, garlic is planted in the fall. Plant it before the ground freezes; for me, I plant sometime between mid-October and Nov 1. (This is well after the first frost.) Put the cloves pointy end up, with the point about 2" below the surface of the soil. Then mulch thickly.

When the greens poke through the mulch in the spring, I pull the mulch back from around each plant so it can keep growing, unimpeded. I leave the mulch to keep the weeds down.

I get scapes in June, and dig the garlic bulbs when the bottom few leaves have turned brown. That's usually in July, so there is plenty of time to grow something else that will be ready in 60-70 days. I think I've planted zucchini in the garlic bed and gotten squash.

I'm adding raspberry and blackberry bushes this year too! I have 5 blueberry bushes that were here when I moved in luckily but wanted to add to them! They got their first winter pruning in like 7 years 😬 haha

Im in NC so I have a long growing season. This year my goal was to have a continuous productive garden, even through winter. My winter garden had a variety of greens, cabbage, and broccoli. I had much success and it offered many meals this winter to my family and good scraps for my chickens. My goal for 2026 is to sucessfully grow things I have struggled with growing in the past. Such as onions, garlic and pumpkins. Those are staples in my kitchen but I never have luck with those. I also want to expand my wildflower garden it brought so much pollenators to my yard which I believe gave me a successful year.
I highly suggest "Long Island Cheese pumpkins " SB and SVB don't kill them. Their stem isn't hollow like most squash/pumpkin varieties, so they do extremely well. You will get pumpkins without using any chemicals growing those.
