Your cleaning solution?

I have heard that 1 part bleach, 1 part dish soap and 10 parts water is a good solution for cleaning. I am wondering if anyone else has used this, and if you could make a big batch how long does it keep? If you use something else... what do you use?

Is there any particular reason to be wanting to use all that?

Just brushing it all out works good for me, with a bit of water and scrubbing on any stubborn bits of poo.

IMO there is really no reason to use disinfectants or soaps or anything liek that unless you have had some particular infectious disease in your coop that you're concerned about.

Just make sure that you don't mix ammonia with bleach = toxic fumes. Perhaps cleaning chicken poo (contains ammonia?) with bleach is not a good idea? I'm new to all of this so I have no experience.

I use Dawn dishsoap and water with a big scrub brush. Then I hose it down and suck up the water with a wetvac.

I have found several sources similar to this one http://www.ehow.com/how_5867470_disinfect-chicken-coops-bleach.html which suggest using the bleach WATER and dish soap solution. In talking with a person who knows well about chemical interactions he explained that the water reduces or eliminates the reaction between the two opposing chemicals. I'm going to go outside tomorrow fill a jug with water, add some bleach and dish soap and see what happens. will report findings.

Ok everyone. I did the experiment. I took a gallon jug outside and put in 1/4 cup of bleach, filled it up with water with a little room at the top and then added 1/4 cup of dawn this is a 1:1:21 ratio... it was not bad at all. I took a bin and dumped the jug in and made several gallons and used a push broom to scrub a months worth of 5 chickens poop off my covered front porch. then I rinsed with the garden hose and let it air dry. I think it would be fine to use twice a year in a chicken coop such as mine which opens fully on all sides or if there was a disease problem. as long as it was rinsed very well and allowed to completely dry it should not harm any of the chickens.

In my youth I worked for a while in a wholesale pet supply. The mice were in bathtubs with screen doors on top. Cleaning the mouse tanks involved, yes, bleach.

I finally went quit and back to work for my parents. Huffing lacquer thinner in the screen printing shop was a distinct improvement over burning my eyes out with chlorine.​
