I'm curious, how many chickens you have and how much feed you go through each month? I have 24 hens, 1 Adult rooster, I also have 23 pullets, 3 weeks old. I was reading on another post and was amazed at how little some feed thier chickens. Someone said they only go through a 50 lb bag of feed in a year for 42 chickens, seems unlikely, unless they are free ranging 24/7 and not giving them feed! For us we go through a 50 lb bag of feed each week, approx. $60 dollars a month. I only feed once a day in the morning and give them a small bucket full and then they also free range daily, occasionally treats...but not often.

You don't want to know.

And by you I mean me.

We have 27 chicks. Our chicks are just over 2 weeks old. They are eating chick starter and have gone through nearly an entire 20# bag of it. I will venture to say there is a lot of waste going on. My son turned the food dish over a few times and the chicks did their thing too, lol.

That bag of feed cost $10.00, I think.

A really good way to combat a feed bill is to plant a lot of nutritious weeds for forage.

3-5 ounces per bird daily depending on the weather. If they free range all day, they don't need as much commercial feed to supplement. SO...I feed mine a plethora of grass, bugs, and scraps, and a bit of feed. The feed bill is not very high for my 30ish birds being that it is now Springtime and grass is growing.

I have 11 hens and one rooster that go through a 50lb bag in about 5 weeks. Their feeder is never empty, but they do free range and get plenty of table scraps.
I also have 10 Cornish cross chicks, that have gone through 75% of a 40lb bag of feed in less than 3 weeks.'
Feed costs me about $10 for 50lbs.

Feed bill is paid off nicely by birds most of the time. I have about 87 chickens, I go through 2 bags a week. We free range ours too, but on 2 acres of pasture. (well, pasture filled with shrubs and stuff)
