This chick is about 3 months old. I got it as a day old chick at the fair to put under a broody in hopes of breaking her. It worked. Now I am left wondering what I've got.

I'm guessing female because of the comb -- a Barrred Rock that I got at the same time (and the same way) has a very similar comb. But, I suppose it could be a cushion comb on a male.

Breed guesses? It could be anything -- there is an incubator set up at the poultry barn at the fair where dozens of chicks are hatched during the course of the week, the eggs are donated by local farms without regard for breed. Some sort of mutt is quite possible.

I don't know my standards as well as I know my bantams so I won't guess on breed (very well might be a mix, though), but I'm definitely going to say pullet! Cute girl, too.

Looks like a RIR to me.

A lot of dark feathers for a RIR, especially a pullet, isn't it?

Hi Tim!

I'm going to say that she is not a Welsummer (I am basing my judgement on the color of her earlobes....Welsummers by the age of 3 months should be showing red earlobes) but I'm thinking she is a mix of some sort for sure, possibly a Brown Leghorn cross. She is cute!

Here's a pic of one of my Welsummer girls when she was about 3.5 months old, I call this their gangly tween-age.

Sorry but, that bird is not even close to a R.I. Red..
