***Your Opinion, and a Question Just for YOU****

Australorp

Good Layer of brown eggs, was the champion egg layer before the ISA brown
Dual purpose breed-both for eggs and meat
If you are looking for a broody look no further
Docile
Many times they are confused with other breeds.

If you are looking for a non-broody breed, this won't fit

Wyandotte
I'm not sure if this could be classified heavy but hey do seem bigger.
Mixed temperaments, good egg production sometimes you get broodies and dual purpose

Orpington
Has quite a bit of meat on them and are good egg layers. If you buy from a heritage breeder then you might get a very good heavy bird.
These also go broody when given the chance. I love this breed, and personally think they are such sweet hearts.

Jersey Giant
The largest chicken breed in the world! Hens are twice the size of RIR hens and are docile. If a broody appears eggs might be broken in the nest due to weight. Roosters if caponzied can reach 13 lb. Hens are very heavy too, I also recommend this breed though be ready for weight lifting

Brahma
Gentle Giants is the way I would describe them, hens are sweet hearts. You'll recieve an egg every second or third day. Long to mature available at hatchery's for cheaper prices. And a true heavy breed. Also a friendly docile breed.

Cochins are another option though they and brahmas take long to mature before they are officially adults.
Wishing you the best with your chicken adventure

This is all so very interesting. Although, I enjoy my chickens on more of a pet level, I do pride myself on their "every once in a wile" eggs. I would think that larger size birds would produce larger eggs. Is this not the case?
And to change the subject a little bit, I went to a chicken meet Saturday in Dickson TN, and noticed some chickens with what looked like their feathers on backwards. They were so beautiful and fluffy, with their feathers seemingly going the other way and feathers on their feet. I think it may have been a frizzled cochrin. What traits, personality do they generally have? Are there any other breeds that have different feathers? I would have gotten one but they only had roos left and I've got one established roo already and don't want another.
I looked on the breed page here on BYC, but I thought I would ask you guys on some insight.
Thanks

I am totally changing the subject here, and I apologize for that. When is the next chicken swap in Dickson? I live in southern Montgomery county, and I have been trying to find a local swap.
Thank you!!

To your first question I think JG are great birds and do lay large eggs, in your second question you are talking about frizzles, I believe they do lay eggs bantam size and I think they are more of a ornamental chicken I love the frizzles and and sizzles (silkie, frizzle mix) and when I get my farm I am going to have some. I also have Ausalops (sp) they are not laying but do seem to be a nice size bird with good laying, my Red star sex links are great layers also. I have decided after being on this site for almost a year that I want a few of each kind of chicken just to make my flock unique. now are you just looking for egg production or getting into breeding if breeding then you will need a rooster for the chickens you want to breed unless you are just going for sex stars or mutts. I hope this help answer some of your questions.

I guess I am in it for more of a hobby. Not breeding purposes or anything serious like that, although I would love someday to see some baby chicks and the passing of the generations

. I just like more of the variety and beauty of different types of chickens. Like live ornamental garden eye candy!!....lol

And to the comment about another swap, actually someone on here sent me a message about the swap and that is how I found out. I tell you, this BYC site is wonderful!

Is the Frizzled Cochrin a bantam? I like the bigger birds, I'm not too much interested in the bantam breeds. The ones I seen at the swap didn't seem that small like bantams. They were bigger closer to hens. But maybe the way their feathers were all ruffled and on backwards make them look bigger.
I believe the brahmas have feather feet.
I liked your picture though. Looks like a beautiful bird. Ironic its on the kitchen table look likes

As far as I have seen most frizzles are bantam size but I think you can breed a frizzle with another type of chicken and get at least some frizzle mixes out of them not sure I haven't gotten into the breeding part yet since I still live in town but I want to breed some chickens when I get my farm, I love my back yard flock I have many different types and colors and I love them all the bantams are really cute to watch they are very funny chickens. I have 3 EE bantams that lay pretty blue eggs and I have a lemon blue Cochin/bantam Plymouth rock (white) rooster he looks like a fuzzy feet barred rock if you want I can post a picture of him he is very cool and has no problem with the standard size hens.

yes I would very much like to see the pictures!
Can anyone else as well, give me pictures/information on frizzled Cochrins.
The one I had seen looked larger than a bantam. Is this possible??
Just looking for more information on the peculiar, different, beautiful creatures.
Also....Does a bigger bird mean a bigger egg??
What does molt mean and what are symptoms signs?
And....what are the pros and cons of going to an auction?
I wonder if there are any auctions in Middle TN??
