Hmmmmmmm I cant believe no one has mentioned pekins or khaki cambells.Khaki cambells are the best layers of the duck world and far outlay chickens also they produce 360 eggs a year (if given good treatment).pekins grow way faster than than broilers and if you wanna keep them as pets the are soooooooooooooooo docile and cute the also lay larger than jumbo eggs that cant fit in my egg cartons

.the too area lso ver good layers. GL and I hope you have fun with your new duckies

Khakis are cool. I love my little khaki/buff mutt. She is the funniest thing...she was playing in the sprinkler today

My runner is a sweet duck but afraid of her own shadow.

My rouen is shy and reserved, but a very beautiful duck. He is very good to the khaki mutt. He was her "babysitter" when she was only a few weeks old.

But I have to say my 3 Welsh Harlequin girls are amazing. I just got them Thursday. They are much calmer about being touched and picked up (they still squirm, but they aren't nearly as bad as the other ducks were when they were babies).

I was just laying in the grass with them and they were climbing all over my arms, darting in and out from under my chin (I was up on me elbows) and generally being curious and goofy.

The really cool part is they will lay eggs just like a khaki and they can brood their own young.

Besides, can you really resist this???

I'm kind of tied between the Pekins (we have 3 females & 1 Male currently, but two of the girls are sitting on 18 eggs between them) because they have so much personality. Our first female thinks she runs the whole farm and runs around telling everyone (even the cows, horses & geese) that she's the boss.

I've also really come to enjoy Muscovies though just because they are so much fun to watch waddle & wag. We have two older males (Butch & Sundance of course) who live down at the pond they decide who gets to swim and for how long. They will follow you around hissing and wagging all day if they think there might be a cheerio or two in it for them.

Muscovies are the only ducks I've kept and this is a very subjective topic depending on personal taste but having said that...

Muscovies are:
~Quiet
~Excellent setters and mothers
~Superb bug controllers
~Best for eating, even better than Pekin
~Their meat is low fat (even lower than turkey)
~Not hyper and have silly and endearing behaviors

Down side:
~The drakes fight like Gladiators during the breeding season so must be kept separate.
~They fly and need to have their wings clipped annually.
~They have very sharp/big claws and wing slap like crazy when you try to catch them.
~The drakes are VERY big & strong!

See Muscovy info & photos on my website.

Good luck! I hope you find what you are looking for.

Well mine are only a week old but of the two breeds...I love my Anconas. They are friendly, not spastic and are apparently excellent layers.

The welsh harlequins are flightier and not as friendly.

I have 4 Cayugas and i have never had ducks before these i really love them.
They are very busy and noisy most of the time when ranging and love to swim.
Great personality really imprinted to me very well and call to me when i'm outside.

I also have Call Ducks very cute but hyper and loud always wanting my attention and will peep very loudly when i'm not in sight.

My son has Mallards and they are very quiet and shy and prefer to stay in their pen than range.
