Sorry I have 6 favorites!
Is that allowed?
As a new chicken owner, I didn't think I should play favorites and leave one breed off the list I can see the different personalities but heck, they aren't even old enough to have a history on which to base a breed preference.
- They all provide the same number of eggs per week: 0, they are only 9 weeks old
- They have the same "no eggs" lag during molt: they haven't molted OR laid eggs yet
- They all made it through the cold Vermont winter equally well: hasn't happened yet
- They all laid equally well through the cold Vermont winter: see above
- They are all equally friendly with each other: haven't seen the pecking order getting serious yet.
One each: Astralorp, Faverolle and Chantecler, will hop in my lap for earwigs. The Cubalayas probably would since they are the only ones we can pick up without a fuss but they aren't all that interested in earwigs. The rest are interested but will get only close enough to take one from my hand, if that close. The ones in my lap aren't real generous about sharing with the less trusting birds and they are closer to the 'source' so it isn't hard to figure out which birds get the "'chicken's share" of the goodies. The most nervous chicken is the other Chantecler. So "friendliness" isn't just a breed thing, it is an individual chicken thing.
So, for now, the 6 breeds I have are my favorites!
