Yuck! That Was Nasty!

DH wants them because he finds them appealing and because we like to eat duck. I want to get the chickens well established first.
I love to eat duck. I'm just still a bit apprehensive about raising something with the intent of eating it. (For me personally because I have obnoxiously high empathy)

I found that with the chickens at least, once I got them undressed they looked pretty much like a grocery store chicken.

I'm not especially squeamish.

Yeah, I helped slaughter a rooster that was being a pain - he didnt crow, he SCREAMED - but I didnt do the cleaning. I think I can rationalize it if it's a problem bird. But I also think the effort put into cleaning it might be worth just going to the store and buying one haha.

If you do decide to get ducks, and want them to eat the creepy crawlies, make sure you offer them when the ducks are still pretty young - acclimate them to things you WANT them to eat. I have a couple that spent too much time with access to only their crumble and they barely will take greens; bugs? No way! 🙄🤦‍♀️ They give me the most disgusted look that can possibly be on a ducks face when I offer something like a word or a snail. Then my appleyard hen runs over and slurp! Gone. 🤣

My chickens didn't go for slugs either, unfortunately. But they LOVED Japanese beetles! I spent hours this last summer hunting for beetles for them. They liked the grubs too. (What's the difference between a grub and a slug, I asked them. No answer.) I am going to see if I can be a force for Japanese beetle extinction in my my area.

Silver Appleyards are the ones my DH likes the looks of best.
I love them, if I had to choose only one breed to keep, it would be appleyards. :) quirky, personable, gorgeous, lay nice big eggs regularly, and like a hoover vacuum when it comes to bugs and things. xD and definitely edible if you wind up with more drakes than you bargained for. (Although I couldn’t eat them, I sold them instead lol.)

Mine hate slugs and snails! Although, my one girl found a young snake and well, all bets were off as all the other chickens were running after her trying to steal it away! I stood in horror, but yet had morbid curiosity as I watched her inhale it...🤮🤮🤮
