Zane Made REAL Progress (New Pics Pg 99)!RIP Lorelei...

Zane was able to take a really great sunbath today in the garden. He toasted one side, then turned himself around so he could stretch out the opposite wing, too. He is still eating well, but his color is very pale, yellowish-whitish in the face. And his comb tips are curling over, which is odd-looking. DH crossed one ankle over the opposite thigh in the lawn chair and put Zane in the crook made by that configuration with his legs hanging down. Zane sat watching the skies and alarmed for the girls when big birds flew over. Hopefully, it made him feel useful. It's been a month now since he fell.
Lorelei is still very thin, roams most of the day, and goes to roost very, very early. She still is not laying.

this is just too sad Will they ever get better? Just speaking out loud ...doesn't need an answer...I know things will go one way or the other in time but it is just heartwrenching. I pray things go well. They are at least happy. I have some that go to roost very, very early. I don't know why? I have been making saddle covers for the girls whose backs are bare. One who goes to roost early has a bad back so I put one on her in hopes she will be confident to go outside.
I think I am getting rid of my cochin roos, too and just wait for a buff orp roo. Give the gals a rest.

well I'm glad they are both still holding on but I sure wish you'd see some improvement.
still praying for you guys!!

Reporting in: Zane doesn't look well today. He is worse than pale, panting alot, eating though not as much. I put him in a dust hole today and he seemed to really like that, but he couldn't really dust much since he really doesnt have the use of his legs.
Lorelei's comb and wattles look dark and purplish, she's walking like in slow motion and doesn't eat as much when I give her special food. She did go for the last of the mealworms, though, but ignored her yogurt she usually loves.
Sadly, I now have another that is acting like she has an egg issue. My RIR flock leader, Ruby, my first ever layer, is moving very slowly. She was on a nest today, then stood straining for a long time, but no egg. I know she laid one day before yesterday and she still weighs what feels like twice as much as Lorelei, so this has just started. Her eggs have, for awhile now, had thin whites and odd shells, though. I was wondering if it would turn into a situation like this with her, too. We did the warm bath, mineral oil in the vent, but there isn't an egg "in the pipe", it seems. She's acting just like Lorelei did last summer, straining for long periods on the nest with nothing forthcoming.
When is this going to end?! Ruby is one of the original girls, too, like Lorelei, so she's also two and a half years old, not ancient for a chicken. She began laying at 19 weeks old and has been a very consistent layer her entire life. They have very high quality feed and hardly any extra snacks to mess with their protein, vitamin/mineral levels. I know I just hatched alot of chicks as future layers, but I really didnt think I'd start losing my original girls so soon.

Cynthia,
Keeping my fingers crossed for Zane, Lorelei and Ruby.

One of the things that sometimes helps with eggbound problems is concentrated calcium. I have used Calci-boost with some success, but have also heard you can squish up some calcium pills, mix with a little water and feed it directly to them with a syringe. If it is internal laying, that is another issue.

Hope everyone perks up.

oh no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well we've got not such great news here, my barred rock Mimi hasn't laid an egg in about a month, her comb is looking smaller than usual but she appears healthy in every way.
Daphne my Black Aussie also hasn't laid in over a month although she was never a great layer, sometimes including today she'll hang out off by herself and lay down or stand with her tail down. today she's got brown runny poops & she's got no appetite, her crop seems empty, but she was FINE yesterday. My girls are just a couple of months younger than yours Cyn and I'm afraid we'll be encountering the same sort of thing you're going through. I've got my broody Sunny on 3 welsummer eggs I bought, I'm sure hoping she can hatch out at least two hens for me.
I'm going to start a post asking for advice about what might be wrong with my girls, I'm stumped.

Oh Cyn. I'm soooo sorry.

I wish things would just get better for you. This just doesn't quite seem fair. Sending LOTS of hugs your direction.
